ios 8 is HUGE

Well I just went to install iOs 8 on my 16 gb. Mini retina that's already bursting with Paid audio apps only to find that I need 6 GB. of free space to install. WTF?
Guess I'm sticking with 7.
Any suggestions?

  • That can't be right... At least I really hope it's an error. WTF indeed!

  • Do it over i-tunes..... it always needs a ton for install but after install it should be not as big.

  • So...you need about 6 Gb free, and Apple doesn't make 32 Gb new idevices anymore...interesting.

  • Some reported that if you do it via iTunes you'll need half of that space.

What's more interesting that they do still make 16gb devices! This clearly is devised to fuck with people's minds

    ...and wallets!

  • It needs about 6GB to install. That doesn't mean the update will permanently occupy 6GB on your device. The update file is less than 1.5GB. Delete some big apps (make sure you have them backed up first) update and reinstall.

  • Worryingly I just completed a fresh install and in my usage it now informs me that only 11.5gb is available. There is 1gb of space taken up by stuff I can't find. Oh bugger.

  • By the way long time lurker. This is a great forum. So felt the need to tell others of the space loss. I'm sure it wasn't that much with ios7

  • Anyone know how to initiate an iOS cleanup?

  • Back up to iCloud, restore the icloud save, then re sync.

Looks like iOS 8 will take up an additional 1 GB of space (give or take) depending on the device. Ars Technica has a very comprehensive review.

  • Download size was 859mb on my ipad2. System files already occupied just under 6gb. Even after download and decompression this did not dramatically increase. There has to be a change in system file size for new services. There always is.

  • Cheers for the info. It was a bit of a shock. BM2 on its own it huge, I guess I'll just have to be selective with the apps I install. Fair to say though the iPad mini will be staying on 7 for quite some time.

  • I'm going to wait this one out.

  • I'm totally chillaxed about this one. One thing only might just get me super excited about ios 8 and that would be a new ipad with 2gb ram!

  • Trembling with anticipation while sampling ivcs3 with samplr.

  • 1,1 Gb on my iPad4.

Reviews about the performance on iPad 2 devices will be very appreciated!

  • Anyone know how to get rid of that "latest" bar you get on top of the screen when double clicking to show the multitask? That "latest" bar shows latest calls and messages, and I'm not using my iPad for that really. Would be one less thing that cluttered the UI, and one less thing taking up resources if it could be shut off somewhere.,:/

    @ChrisG

You can turn it off in mail, contacts, calendar settings.

    Great, thanks!

  • my 16 GB iPad Air says it needs 6.9 GB free to install!

this is a smart move by Apple- by making it so that most of us will have to back-up and delete apps to update- hardly anyone will for a long time- so only a few 'beta testers' will be there to complain about all the bugs- /:

  • Jesus- people are saying the best way to update is to do a restore first!

  • Can you believe the Jesus people though?

  • look fellas- we got a wise guy over here

iTunes recommends you download to your computer all apps purchased before make that (which is scary to me, anyway), so in my case it will take looong time.

Even that, I'm still checking out if all the apps I use (many of them not musical) will work properly under iOS8.

The "make backup+restore factory settings+restore backup" is too much for my heart, I'm affraid.

  • Yea. I think I'm gonna wait this one out a bit. I'm sure all the new features are great but I know many devs have not caught up yet. My ios system runs perfectly fine right now so no need to mess with it so that I can have swipe messages and other stuff like that.
I am excited about the new ipad though. I've heard it'll be announced Oct. 21. I'm hoping it has the A8, maybe a bigger screen version and for god sakes more RAM!! That's something that will get me excited!!!
It's a great day to (not) update. :-)
