Quit djing only to be pulled back in.

After djing for about 20 years I decided to stop back in 2009. I was over the party scene, fast women, drugs, booze, chaos and well even more drugs.
Fast forward to now and I’m back djing 2 days a week and one night a week.
I moved to Mexico from USA two years ago to escape the crazy US govt. looking at what America has become during this current administration I think I made the right move.
One night a week I’m doing reggae music and the 2 day parties I play at I start off doing Ambient then go into downtempo and really chill house music. Crazy that I’m retired and making an extra 700-800 a month income that I never imagined I’d be making again. It’s cash so it makes me even happier knowing I’m screwing over the IRS and the American govt.
The moral of this story is never quit making music or doing what you love cause u never know when you will reap the benefits even if you’re in your 50’s.
You never know when you’ll be at that right place at the right time to do why you do best!

  • What kind of crowd/venue caters to ambient and chill music - which also requires a DJ and not simply a playlist?

  • We have tons in my town, everything from hip breweries and wine tasting rooms, to food cart lots with stages. Lots of smaller events in parks too, give people some live music without beating them over the head with the club music. I DJ downtempo and it's pretty wild the number of places that would rather have a DJ than a playlist.

Couldn’t agree with you more. I’m 55. I’ve never really DJd but I’ve been producing my own music for many years and have played them at a few festivals between bands.

But now I have my first paid DJ gig tomorrow! I’ve never done music to make money. My attitude has been it’s my hobby, but it’s nice to make a couple of bucks here and there. So far from my performances I’ve made 5 beers and a couple of t-shirts 😊

Awesome man! Congratulations. Keep it up and let people know you produce as well!

It’s a place on the beach. In the mornings we do yoga and ice bath along with a really healthy breakfast so I play ambient then and then in the afternoon I start playing more of the Downtempo house type beats because it becomes more of like a beach club vibe. A very very chill beach club vibe with a lot of weed smoking going on. Ha ha.

Funny you say that cause the other day I talked the owner into having more days with a dj. He thought having a playlist would be fine, which it probably would be, but having a dj just creates a little vibe. now he’s 100 percent all in to have a dj everyday he’s open. His place is on a really beautiful beach and there are no other places like his around it so either way he would do well.

  • Beach gigs are so much fun, though in my part of the world it’s quite a bit colder and gloomier!
