King Of Digital epicness: Sigur
If you go down to the woods today…
Sigur is apparently Icelandic for ‘triumph’ or ‘victory’. Sigur Ros is a band whose distinctive sound I very much like. This piece sounds nothing like them, and has nothing particularly to do with Iceland, but the band did provide the inspiration for my favourite preset for, initially, the D1, and still present and correct in King Of Digital, namely ‘Sigur Boss’. And I used it a lot here. So: Sigur it is.
Multiple instances of K of D running all sorts of evocative 80s digital goodness with nary a crash in sight, Atom and KB1 on sequencing duties, followed by multiple loops of same in AUM led to this rather dense confection. An interlude from an unmade movie about Iceland’s Huldufólk – the ‘Hidden People’, a.k.a. Elves, perhaps?
( Fun fact: a surprisingly high proportion of Icelanders apparently still believe in the hidden people: https://yourfriendinreykjavik.com/elves-of-iceland. Though since one variant are simply taller, better looking more graceful versions of ordinary humans, apparently they could be living among us and just making us feel bad for being shorter and uglier...)
As a side note: there’s something about King Of Digital that seems to invite epic-ness, and it sure isn’t helping me move out of my generally Norse pretentions of late. I seem to be accidentally producing a Dark Norse concept album, track by track…
…Hey ho, the muse has deemed it thus and I must submit to her. Normal Lovecraftian weirdness will resume shortly.
I think…
Comments
I wouldn't say it sounds nothing like S. Ros. Make this the very short beginning of an album opening track about the legend of one Huldufólk left big nailtoe fungus infection, and how a druid magical attempt to heal the infection helped creating the Vatnajökull glacier. After 4:00, ask Jónsi to add his angelic vocals and violin bowed aethereal guitar and voilà. A great Sigur Ros side project!
It probably doesn't seem so, but I really love Sigur Ros and your track as well. And I admit, I know nothing about Huldufólk's nail fungi 🤦.
Edit: Bjork's Fossora is a love letter to fungi and mushrooms ! I might not be totally wrong afterall !
Feel free to follow this muse as far as you want. Who likes Lovecraftian weirdness anyway? 😛
That preset in King of D (hee hee🤣) Sigur Boss is one of my favourite sounds on any iOS synth I’ve got.
Your usual stellar work. I’m also a big fan of Sigur Ros.
This piece has less ice and more cave and darkness than their stuff. I’m loving it.
I searched for that Sigur Boss preset in D1 and didn’t see it. What bank is it in?
I don't know what it is, but whatever it is, I hope you keep it up. That is outstanding stuff!
You always impress me and this is no different. Bravo 🎉 something cool about noisy drones made with a cheesy 80s/90s sounding synth. It fits in a weird way. Great stuff. And KoD is an excellent app.
Sigur Ros is great! I always think of the ending of the Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The Sigur Ros track fits perfectly and always brings a tear to my eye.
Thanks all It’s nice to be appreciated! Glad to see fellow Sigur Ros fans here too. A unique and distinctive -sounding band, still going strong:
@JanKun : love that backstory. Seems dangerously credible…
@Ben : I just tested finding it again. All you should need to do is type ‘Sigur’ into the search bar in KoD and it should pop right up. Its full name is ‘BB Sigur Boss’.
I love the sound so much I have to ration myself, otherwise all of my tracks would have it on. It seems unusually alive for a digital app patch, if I can put it that way. For a non player such as myself, it makes it dangerously easy to get something that sounds emotive and organic, just by using the KB1s scale feature to avoid bum notes, and letting rip across the chosen scale.
@jimhanks : I do! ( as you may have noticed… abnormal service will be resumed )
It’s better than the recent ish Sigur ros stuff I’ve heard!!!!
I can agree with that. Kind of feels they are meandering a little with their recent material.
My first thought when I heard the starting notes was the kind of upbeat music that starts a Disney movie soundtrack, but obviously it moved on to Dismal-y and didn’t disappoint. The ending uses some gorgeous sounds!
Wow, this is EPIC!
Thanks for sharing. Absolutely stunning. Could be a movie soundtrack for sure!
It’s in the Brice Beasley pack in both D1 and King of Digital… with some change in the resulting sounds I think.
Well done @Svetlovska. Not sure if your development has been exponential over the past few yrs or that you were hiding your light under a bushel basket. Either way it’s great. Lol, you were once doing police work, right?
Hi all, and thanks for the gift of your attention, and your comments. It’s much appreciated!
@LinearLineman : thank you. No lights or bushels, if there is improvement in my noises it’s the cumulative effect of having time to noodle around more or less every day, since the Force is no longer with me. Served 25 years in all, woman and boy
Great piece ! Like it a lot !
Great track @Svetlovska… you’re putting up a series of really engaging content. You have a real artists vision and a voice that shines through in your creations.
Coming late to the party here, so I feel like an echo, but this is epic stuff. Hope it makes it to the finished Norse album!
Ha, I’m even later but concur with the comments above. I’m lucky enough to have been to Iceland and the music fits beautifully with the strange and yet majestic landscapes.
The bass at 1:10 is just epic. Great work, you're one of the few "drone-y" composers I always enjoy
This wonderful piece would be right at home in the movie "The Northman".
