A little Lynch in your ear: Le Silencio

“So David Lynch walks into a bar and says ‘hey barkeep, what’s the speciality of the house?’ And the barkeep says ‘… “

My recent and much belated viewing of David Lynch’s enigmatic masterpiece Mulholland Drive, which I had somehow unaccountably missed seeing the last few decades, obviously affected me more than I thought. I was noodling around with an Intellijel Palette’s-worth of mini-maxed modules (primarily Ornament & Crime running the amazing Swiss Army knife that is the Phazerville firmware, After Later Audio’s super slim 4HP Peaks clone, an actual Beads, a Bitbox microsampler and the Division 6 Mini Sequesizer, as below, - except the blank 1U is standing in for a Beepboop headphone out, which at 8 hp is the smallest I could find, but they don’t have a picture of it on Modulargrid yet.)

To my surprise, I found myself channeling the kind of sleazy strip-joint noise which might have been low in the mix at the very strange club/bar/cabaret/whatever the hell it is ‘Le Silencio’ which features in that movie.

Recorded initially onto Bitbox SD card and transferred to AUM on ipad for final messing about and, er, yeah. There it is. All hardware save for some additional Blocswave samples. I could have been a purist about it, put them on the Bitbox too, and triggered them from there manually, but that would have been just silly when I have a perfectly good iPad standing by. So why not just do the whole thing on it?

Because happy accident. I make different noises on the modular, tweaking knobs in real time, experiencing a different serendipity than I do messing soley on the iPad. I surprise myself. The half drum/ half bass noise on this track from Peaks is a case in point. I don’t think I could have made that on the iPad as I did here. So: surprises. Pretty much constantly. Once in a blue moon, they even turn into something I can actually use.

In the words of King Cimson. “I DO think it’s good! I like it!” :)

  • Mulholland Drive is man near a perfect movie. And it’s not even my favorite Lynch film (I’m a fanboy though so I’m biased).

This is great though! Can definitely hear/feel the Lynch/Badalamenti influence.

  • It beyond music… it’s a world. Conjuring worlds is truly an art.

You will see me one more time if you do good. You will see me two more times if you do bad.

I just wanted to come here.
    To Winkie’s?
    THIS Winkie’s.

    spits out espresso SHIT.

Ok off to listen. Just thinking of the movie jogged all these audio clips in my brain of quotes from it. It was the perfect mindblowing movie for a budding 11th grader to discover. I’ll always consider this and Requiem For a Dream as my intros to the darker side of filmmaking.

You prefer Bill Pullman’s sax wailing? “Wait, why’s the president from Independence Day going so hard?”

Loved the track. My favorite thing about it was the tone of the bass. It sets the whole mood all by it’s lonesome. Very apt. The almost sax with a hint of square wave is very nice too.

  • I really like this. A lot.

Hahaha that crazy free jazz sax solo has influenced my music more than I realize sometimes lol. “We’ve met before haven’t we…”. Lost Highway is another really great film.

Also yeah Billy Rays cameo in Mulholland Dr is classic. I remember first seeing it and having my mind blown.

  • Great experimental piece, very interesting.

  • I like this a lot, captures the atmosphere well, and excellent work using a small case. Love David Lynch’s stuff.
