If you go down to the woods today, you’re in for a big surprise, Part 2: Cernunnos

“Home is the hunter from the hill: Fast in the boundless snare / All flesh lies taken at his will / And every fowl of air.” - A.E. Housman, after Robert Louis Stevenson

Cernunnos, the Horned One, stag-antlered Celtic god of the forest. Mysterious, multifaceted, as elusive in the historical record as in his natural habitat: a debateable appearance on the Viking Gundestrap Cauldron in Copenhagen, another on the Pillar of the Boatman, carved in Paris sometime during the 1st century CE… It may be his face peering from the stone carved foliage of a country church ‘grotesque’ (note: not a gargoyle, unless it spouts water.) Margaret Murray’s King Of Witches, Shakespeare’s Herne, Lord of the Wilds, the archetypal Green Man, Jack-In-The-Green… be wary if you meet him, one moonlit night on a forest path. His allegiance is to the world of nature, not Man.

As to the quotation: Stevenson, knowing he was under the eventual death sentence that tuberculosis was in his time, composed his own epitaph, duly inscribed on his tombstone, in his original piece, Requiem. Housman posted, as tribute, a reworking, above the obituary proclaiming that death so long foretold. Stephenson was finally caught fast by the boundless snare of death in December 1894.

Multiple instances of Decent Sampler, pre-eminently the excellent free version of Frame Drum. Played live via KB1 into Atom, sequenced and mixed live in AUM. Sigur Bos (again! - I admit it, I’m weak!) from King of Digital. Usual reverbs apply, but otherwise, a very straightforward track.

Hope you like it. :)

  • some great texture work and soundscape creation.

  • Lovely and atmospheric. Great track!

  • Which reverbs are your usuals? Damn this is great music. ❤️

  • Very evocative of the words! The frame drum really makes this work!

    I believe it’s Alteza if I'm not mistaken :)

I should've known, lol. Amazing reverb.

Thanks all, for those kind words. The Frame Drum is fantastic. I might even stump up for the paid version. Yes indeed, I can confirm it is Alteza, the init patch. It features on, oh, at a conservative estimate… 100% of my stuff. I use other reverbs as and when - Mangleverb’s edge is good, and SpaceFields, which is more than a reverb, I know, But always Alteza :)

Sweet! Alteza is possibly still the best Ambient reverb out there. The texture and grit you can get out of it.

Spacefields is still a mystery to me despite my reading its manual. 🫣 But, I love that app just the same.

Mangleverb doesn't seem to be in the appstore (at least not on my iPhone), but it does appear Audio Damage is having a Black Friday sale, so I'll for sure pick up some apps I don't have. :)

  • Sounds like an entire forest breathing, and the neo-shamanic percussion sounds like it’s raising whatever is doing the breathing.

  • Despite your protestations I’m sure there’s a musician trying to bust out… your previous life as a drummer shows on this 🥁
Great work, great back story 👍
