Genre bender: I don’t know what it is, but it’s got a good beat!: Ice 9
“The Fourteenth Book is entitled, “What Can a Thoughtful Man Hope for Mankind on Earth, Given the Experience of the Past Million Years?” It doesn’t take long to read The Fourteenth Book. It consists of one word and a period. This is it: “Nothing.” - Kurt Vonnegut, Cat’s Cradle
In Cat’s Cradle, his dark satire of science, religion, human credulity and hubris, Vonnegut gives us Ice 9, an allotrope of water invented by a scientist working for the industrial/military complex, which instantly turns any other water it comes into contact with into an ice-like solid, at normal ambient temperature. Needless to say, it gets out into the wild, with predictable results. If by predictable, you mean the apocalypse.
A survey of the world in its present state suggest Vonnegut’s satire just doesn’t go far enough… I wonder what he would have made of AI?
As to the piece: not my usual drone, (I mean, it’s actually got drums and everything!) It’s even, dare I say it, a bit of a banger, as I believe the young folk say.
So, fellow Forum-ites: a serious question: what genre should I describe this as on SoundCloud and elsewhere?
I’ve got it down for the time being under the generic placeholder of ‘Electronic’, but your thoughts on how I should label it eagerly sought… answers on a postcard, please, to…
…As to how I made this: Three Hilda’s running their own sequencers, looped and varispeeded, on sort-of claps, wibbliness and lead blippety, augmented with some Koala manually triggered samples, and an actual drum loop from Blocswave, kicking off at 2.50 in the piece, all arranged on the fly in Launchpad, and subsequently live mixed in AUM.
Comments
Well that took me by surprise! You should try this approach more often, as this is an eminently listenable piece of music.
I guess we’re going to have to start refer you as “DJ Svetlovska” now…
Dang, this is great, @Svetlovska!
My genre suggestion: Amazeballscore.
@michael_m : ‘eminently listenable’? …. I’m doomed @rottencat : ha! Thank you
I can hear a bit of triphop influence once the drums kick in. Dark ambient as well but with drums 😆
Anyways, this is excellent! Did you launch clips of Hilda inside Launchpad also? Or you’re just using Launchpad as an IAA inside AUM? I use Launchpad quite a bit, it’s great. Blocs Wave too.
Thank you! Ah… triphop, is it? I must confess all the infinite varieties of genre defined by beat are a puzzle box to me. Too old, I guess. I checked out of EDM genre awareness about the time there was ‘disco’ and ‘gay disco’.
No, the Hilda’s were free running inside AUM, Launchpad as an IAA inside too. Yes, Launchpad and Blocswave are both great, but it’s such a shame they aren’t AUV3, if only because I could then resize their windows inside AUM to better manually handle triggering in sync, since there is no automation in AUUUUUUMM!… sorry.
Got a bit carried away there.
Just adding automation to AUM would be the most game changier of game changiers for my particular quick and dirty workflow. Which is a little less quick and a lot more dirty on the fifteenth run through trying to hit all the cues manually…
Automation is my #1 wish for AUM and it would definitely be a big game changer for me. I would never use anything else.
Would love to see all 3 Ampify apps become AUV3. The synths in Groovebox sound fantastic! I’d even love if you could record AUs directly into Blocs. Right now it only works with IAA. Overall I love the apps but that would reaaally push things over the top for me.
Triphop is a really cool genre. Portishead and Massive Attack are probably the “big” ones.
Huh. I always loved both Portishead and Massive Attack. Never realised they were what ‘triphop’ meant. I definitely think there is a productive Venn diagram between Triphop and Dark Ambient then, they both often have something sinister about them, and a kind of out-of-body, woozy, bad trip kind of vibe. Definitely food for thought. I need to explore trip hop drum loops more, I think.
Haha you basically just described trip hop as well 😂 certainly a lot of overlap between the 2. I’m a big Portishead fan myself. Enjoy, there’s lots of cool stuff out there
