Create a shareable folder on iPhone?

edited November 2023 in Other

Airdrop is fantastic for sharing a few files between my phone and MacBook, but sometimes I record quite a few large audio files that can take quite a bit of time to transfer that way.

If I hook my phone up to my MacBook I can see a number of shared folders, but it would be great to create a couple of custom folders. Unfortunately I can’t figure out how to do that, even after researching a few times. It’s so much faster when I do this, but don’t want to have to use folders specific to apps.

Does anyone know how to create a shared folder on an iPhone that can be seen when connected to a MacBook with a cable, and allow file sharing?

The folders you see there are the exposed storage belonging to apps. These are sometimes referred to as the "iTunes" folders. Unfortunately you don't have control over what is shown there and you can't create a shared folder that will show there.

The only thing I can think of is to save the files in an app that does expose it's storage, for instance Documents by Readdle. The Inbox folder of Documents is available there.

[edit] I tried putting something in Documents inbox folder and it doesn't appear on the Mac. 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • I have been doing that, so it’s not that I can’t use this method, just that I’d prefer a dedicated folder.

Are you saying the Readdle Documents folder doesn’t appear on the Mac? I used to have that installed, but didn’t ever really use it. I could reinstall, but not much point if the MacBook doesn’t see it.

No, the documents folder shows on the Mac. I just don't see any of the contents that I copied there. I'm not sure what's up. Could be just my iPhone somehow as the Finder window hangs up when I try to access that folder. Clicking around doesn't help. I have to disconnect and reconnect the phone. 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • Oh well, I can continue as I am. Just wondered if I could create my own folder than can be seen in the Finder on my MacBook.

I think only on iCloud Drive. Your Mac can see Readdle Document’s cloud folder but not the one on my iPhone or on my iPad

Really they should allow you to browse everything that the Files app can browse. But, Apple.

I'd love Airdrop for my PC. The best I've found is the Google Drive app.

AirDrop is great, but a direct cable connection is faster when you have large files. I’m not complaining in general, just surprised that there’s no option to create my own shared folder on my phone.

Problem I've always had with PC is unpredictable device recognition. There have been time when I haven't been able to iTunes sync for days. Then, seemingly for no reason it will. Unpredictable connection is a PITA when all I want to do is listen to a song in the car.

I haven’t even tried connecting my phone to a PC as I know how much of a PITA that can be.

Even with the more straightforward connection to a MacBook I can only use shared folders created by apps.

  • Icloud or dropbox folder
Create iOS shortcut to copy files to that folder.
It can't take that long with audio. And it can run in the background.
Airdrop for large files is also perceived slow because you are forced to wait on screen.

Another option could be Audioshare + webdav.

I could do that, but I’m looking for a direct cable connection as it’s super fast for large files or many files. I can get it to work on existing app folders, but would prefer a dedicated folder if that was possible.

I do it the other way around.

I just connect the iPad over the Files to a folder on the Mac - and can transfer files between them.

He wants to do it over USB connection for better transfer speed. Folder access isn't the same over USB as it is with network shares.

I would not expect USB to be faster than a network share.
I constantly exchange files with over 1 GB in size, and they just fly.

But I cannot try with USB-C, having only old devices 😅

There’s a significant difference when I copy fifty or so files that are maybe 100MB in size or more.
