os 16 failed
I just tried to update to os 16 (on a 6th gen 2018 ipad, with 4.5 gb of space free), and got an error message saying "update failed" - no further elaboration.
Part way through the process, the ipad asked me if I wanted to offload some apps in order to free up space (on a temporary basis - sounded like they would be immediately reinstated after update was complete). I replied "mais oui"
Any ideas?

4.5 GB free is very tight for an OTA update. I believe it takes at least 10 GB, maybe 16 GB to update. The updater may try to remove apps, but it can do nothing about data. If you have some apps with huge data (samples?), you could try off-loading the data to iCloud, or to a memory stick. You need to be wary of the system off-loading apps, because it will try to restore them from the AppStore; any dead apps will just be lost.
Details on OTA update storage usage: First, you need space to download the update file. This can be as much as 2 GB when jumping a major version. Second, the updater creates two temporary partitions on the drive, each roughly the size of the existing System partition. It collects all the required system files in the first partition, then builds the new boot image in the second partition. Finally, it copies the new image into the System partition, and deletes the temporary partitions.
OK, thanks @uncledave - helpful and generous as always.
Seems like a good opportunity to go through the ipad and get rid of snippets of audio that will never get used. And an app cull.
Thank you. You can use the iPad Storage list in Settings to target some big offenders (probably your dearest favorites, unfortunately).
All sorted now. Just needed more space.
Most importantly, I now have 21 new emojis
