What Is Love?

edited November 2023 in Other

In the old days we would occasionally talk about stuff like this. Of course, love is a new app by @brambos but, here on the ground, love is a tough job. Especially in a relationship.

My new partner is a literalist. I’m an absurdist. We are different in most ways. I believe in life as transformative and evolutionary. She… not so much. But, she has signed on for the trip. My efforts to open her up to this way of thinking and feeling expressivity are presumptuous but critical (lol, at least for someone who lives mostly in his imagination). We discuss, we argue, we’re hurt but we keep going and always come out the other side happy with each other.. She was prone to angry outbursts. I’ve reached her in this and she is getting it under control. She’s changing… for me… but also for herself. That’s love, I think.

Of course there are a gazillion examples of love. What’s one of yours? What do they all have in common?
That’s what I’d like to know.

  • Love is laughing at each other's farts.

Love is holding back their hair after too many drinks.

Love is watching the movie you don't what to see just to see them laugh.

Love is the day in/day out, every day, week after week.

Love is getting fatter and weaker and still thinking they're beautiful.

Love is a quiet night doing separate activities in the same room.

    Love is bedhead.

  • Love is when you found cute on her things which you absolutely hate on other people 😂😂

  • Love is difficult to explain but I know when I look at my wife and touch her hand I feel something I’ve never felt before and grows more with day.

As cliche as it is, she literally completes me. I didn’t feel like a whole person until I met her and she genuinely brings out the best in me and I in her.

Love can hurt but it’s also one of the greatest joys one can experience and if I died tomorrow I’d be eternally grateful I got to experience that with her.

    You nailed it.

  • Love is the antidote for suicide but often difficult to find in steady quantities. In that sense it’s addictive with severe withdrawl symptoms. Best taken in moderate doses over long periods of time with occasional sessions of rehab when it goes toxic as it can.

  • Love is the lie we tell ourselves to convince ourselves that we will not die alone, and that we mattered. Though we all will, of course. And we didn’t.

    I love you.

  • Love is many things.

It’s finding the common ground and the differences equally as appealing.

It’s knowing that persevering with a relationship through the hard times is important.

It’s appreciating people being there for you.

It’s appreciating that some people don’t know how to be there for you, but they stay around anyway.

It’s the person who calls you once every ten years as if you spoke yesterday.

It’s remembering that everyone needs a kind word sometimes.

  • For me, my first love will always be music, and my children the pieces I create. Sounds kind of sappy and stupid, I know. 😂 But honestly I don't need anything stepping inbetween my music and me.

I have to respectfully disagree. Love is as real as anything - emotions exist as much as anything tangible but unfortunately our society tends to dismiss their importance. It's the experience itself that is subjective, and you get to choose how much importance you place in them. But to deny their existence is not factually accurate.

Dying alone is definitely perspective - will each of our moment of expiration occur as a solo activity? Certainly. But that doesn't mean that the time leading up to that final moment needs to be alone.

That's all - just a different perspective and perhaps food for thought. You've also given me lots to think about 😁

I just want to die peacefully in my sleep. Unlike my passengers.

  • Love is 2 people accepting each other as who they are and enriching each other’s lives in ways that uniquely works for them.

@LinearLineman I think what you’ve described is a perfect example.

  • “The love you get is equal to the love you give.”

I am so screwed. Look squirrel!

    I knew I couldn’t be the only one 😂

  • One of my earliest memories is riding in the car with my father listening to some AM radio and I asked him 'why are songs always about love?'. I don't remember him giving me an answer to that.

  • Why is Love?

  • When is love?

  • Just Who and Where are left and we’re no closer to a common understanding.

Love is a mystery to fools like us. I’ll take replies off line with a libation.

  • What time is love?

  • Just to be clear we’re talking about tennis right?

  • Is nature or nurture, do we learn to love, is it dependency, as a child held close to the mother or that safe place of a womb from which we emerge?
