iOS app for screen capturing and recording as similar to FastStone Capture (Win) as possible
I would like to ask you for help/advice.
I'm a long term satisfied user of FSCapture and I would like to buy something similar for my iPad.
https://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm
I hope for all-in-one app that could meet all these needs:
- Capture with user-defined delay
- Capture full screen and user defined rectangle region
- Edit captured image (add lines, shapes, pointers, annotations, blur selected area ... )
- Record full screen and user defined rectangle region

Hmmm. Y'know iOS has a built-in screen recorder; you enable it in the Control Center Settings. It captures a full-screen video that you can edit with the Photos app, or any 3rd party video app. I suspect that you will not find a 3rd party app that works as you wish, because of Apple's privacy concerns about screen access.
I think that's correct. I don't think there is any recording app that can do those things. There are editing apps that can accomplish all of that after the fact. The photos app can do some basic cropping. iMovie can do much more (see the App Store description. LumaFusion is the ultimate, and can do virtually anything.
That app is a desktop app. It's easy on desktops. IOS has more security limitations so its not that easy.
You can look at NDI.
Many NDI apps that can do all that, but not locally. You stream that feed to any desktop mac / win and capture it live. On the local network.
But local on iOS.
Use built in screen capture
Import in FCPX, davinci or lumafusion.
Or even Procreate Dreams.
Crop and edit it. Or make a template
Thank you very much @uncledave , @wim and @tpj for your reaction and explanations.
After 3 months with my first iPad, I find that I had somewhat exaggerated ideas that everything on iOS would be better from a user perspective than on Windows. Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but I'm successfully getting used to it.
If you've listed the best 3rd party apps that could be used, the selection is quite limited for what I need (and vice versa, I don't need)
FCPX (Final Cut Pro( has a subscription model - nope.
DaVinci - 3.3GB, $95 - overkill
LumaFusion is primarily for video editing - don't need this feature at all.
ProCreate Dreams - I'll look into it, though I think it'll be more for creative painters than for adding annotations to a screenshot.
Now I'm sorry I didn't state in my initial post why I need such an app.
99% of the time I use FSCapture to document an issue that I report on. The vast majority of cases are about taking a picture of part of the screen and adding graphical annotations (arrows, frames, text annotations). This is the basis to which I would like to find a suitable application.
Always a good idea to describe your intended use case:) If reporting issues with a (static?) screen shot is all you need, then no need to buy any apps. Use the iPad button combo to take the screen shot, then open it in Photos and hit Edit. You can easily add frames, arrows, text, etc., in various colors, and crop the selection. Give it a try.
When you said screen recorder, I assumed you meant video.
You probably already have all the tools you need right in iOS. Just do a screenshot, then go to the photos app and hit Edit. There you can crop to whatever are you need, add arrows, boxes, text, callout boxes, highlighter pen, free drawing pen, all kinds of shapes, a magnifier etc.
The only feature you listed that's missing is user defined delay for the screenshot. I understand why that's needed on Windows/Mac, but not so much on iOS.
Yes. The inbuilt ios screen recorder has an inbuilt 3 second delay. Not sure if that can be adjusted but it's not really important as you can just quickly edit your video. Same with a screenshot, it can be edited after.
Don't get me wrong - I really wish we could record video and audio as easily on iOS as on desktop etc. This is mainly for privacy purposes, as mentioned before, so there's a small upside.
And yes, tons of little things are harder on an iPad. Having a decent Bluetooth keyboard helps with many things massively, as you have access to keyboard shortcuts.
Of those video editing tools btw, lumafusion is amazing value at the price, amazing. Also what you get for free in DaVinci Resolve is mindblowing. Most ppl will have no need of the paid version.
But yeah, for photos, the photos app is much more powerful than many realise.
The only feature I ask of Apple's Built-In screen-capture function is to indicate finger or pencil taps on the recorded video.
I HATE using a mouse with the iPad as it totally destroys 'touch experience' which is the main reason I love using the iPad.
The video can always be cropped in post if needed.
One thing I always forget is that there's no need to bring down the control center to stop the screen capture, it's enough to tap on the record indicator in the top bar.
Sometimes it could be nice to be able to overlay the front-camera when screen-recording, this can be done when using for example Keynote to record a presentation by just adding a live-video object using the front-camera into the presentation...
I also wish they would enable this, would be so useful, is there a technical reason why they haven't?
Great tip, never knew that!
Thanks for mentioning Photos, I thought it is just a browser.
The delay is very useful when you can't (or find it difficult) to press the iPad's screen capture buttons. For example I want to capture event caused by my playing on MIDI keyboard or guitar playing. So my hands are "busy" somewhere else at that moment.
In that case your only option is to do a screen recording, then grab the frame that you need. That's easy to do in the photos app.
[edit] humm ... wait a sec. Let me check if you can do something like that with the Shortcuts app. There are a ton of useful image thingies in there. I use it all the time to shrink the size of screenshots to keep from overloading the poor forum server.
@wim Thank you. In the end it looks like Photos will do everything, with the caveat that if I need a delay I'll have to make a video instead of screenshot.
Oh yeh ... it's totally easy to set up a Shortcut to wait a certain number of seconds then take a screen shot.
Let me see if you can make it prompt you for the number of seconds or if you have to make different Shortcuts for different delay times.
Wait .. so I don't need to record a video and find frame?
Is this similar to what I'm looking for?
https://www.quora.com/Does-the-iPad-have-the-ability-to-take-screenshots-every-X-amount-of-time-How-can-I-make-the-iPad-take-screenshots-automatically
Yes, I thought of the shortcuts app after I posted. I then went back and edited the post.
There's a "Wait" action that you can use in shortcuts. So, a simple shortcut could consist of something like:
You could save a shortcut such as this as an icon on the desktop. Bit of an overkill example, but just something to show that you can do more than just delay a few seconds then take a screenshot.
@wim Great, thank you!
I figured out how to get the shortcut to prompt for the number of seconds to delay too. You just have to long-press on the number of seconds to get a popup menu with the option.
@Samu, @Gavinski, unless I’m misunderstanding what you’re after, you can record visual indications of finger taps in your screen record already. You do it via setting up assistive touch…can’t remember the details but Google it and you’ll easily find out. Apologies of I’m misunderstanding!
I think if I remember it only works on m2 ipads or sth. I tried setting this up before and wasn't able to. If you have a link to how to set it up to work on non m2 ipads I'd love to see it
I do think I remember there is some way I tried using assistive touch that kind of worked but didn't give the results I was looking for. I just want to use my ipad as normal but have it show a dot every time I tap, drag, zoom or whatever, while using the iPad totally normally. 99.9% sure that's not possible
I've tried to play around with custom gestures in assistive touch and it's a so-so working hack-around that has to be set up for each app separately, even when enabled it will not properly show swipe-gestures using two or more fingers, long-taps are not indicated and fast double-taps are not 'detected' (ie. no visual change in the 'blob' during double-tap since the pointer doesn't move).
Using mouse on the iPad irks me so much that I simply won't use it just to have a pointer on the screen...
...it totally destroys the 'touch experience' and the 'assistive touch blob' is always 'in the way' somewhere on the screen even when it's faded out.
Screen Recording is one are in iPadOS that is in desperate need for improvements...
...a simple option to 'show taps & gestures in screen recordings' would be more than enough.
I know on the M2 iPads the Apple Pencil has a 'hoover option' which could be practical but I won't get a new iPad for one feature alone and since even that is not 'recorded' by default in screen-recordings it's totally meh...
Cheers!
Also with the 'custom touch' enabled all other gesture all are disabled so no scrolling or swiping around to UI so totally un-usable...
Yeah I can't remember the details, but anything I tried was a horrible user experience
I was just referring to the instructions to do so as found here
https://support.screenpal.com/portal/en/kb/articles/show-finger-taps-when-recording-your-screen-on-ios
This doesn’t require a particular level of iPad as far as I’m aware. Having said that, it sounds like this is what you and @Samu have already tried and weren’t satisfied.
Having myself only come to iOS/iPadOS from Android early last year, it’s amazing how great some things on iOS are and yet how many strange omissions - such as this - there are.
I've sent another feedback to Apple asking them to optionally include touches and other gestures when doing a screen-recording.
Some say the features are 'disabled' to protect the privacy of the user (think tapping in a password etc. during a video call with screen-sharing enabled and the taps would be shown).
I don't buy that argument especially if it can be enabled and disabled.
But in some countries where end-users are more likely to blame a company such as Apple instead of admitting they are total idjeets some limitations have to be added... (I mean suing McDonalds because the Coffee is too HOT? Gimme a break!)
The touches, swipes and other gestures would also be of great assistance when doing a 'screen share' over Airplay or recording the video over HDMI etc.
Oh well, I know of now iPad based 3rd party app that adds gestures on the fly.
Cheers!
The reasoning behind why this is missing has to do with privacy from what I know.
Think about it, if you would have the imaginary 'record taps and gestures' feature enabled and do a video-call with a screen sharing sessions and type in a password...
People tend to be quicker to blame a company than look in the mirror when things don't go as intended
Hang on, your own post previous to this one says you don’t buy that argument but then you imply that I’m being quick to blame a company?
I personally don't buy the 'privacy' argument at all.
It should be up to the end-user to be 'smart enough' to know what to enable or disable on a need to use basis.
But the harsh reality is that some don't want to take responsibility for their own actions and blame a 3rd party.
We've had incidents here when customers sue the supplier of network-equipment 'because they were hacked' and it turned out that they did not follow the recommendation to change the default password...
Oh, cool, i understand. Sorry, i thought you were accusing me personally of being quick to blame Apple because i called the omission of such a feature strange.
Of course i understand why they don’t include it from their point of view, but personally i agree with you - it should be optional and people should then take responsibility for using it and any consequences of having used it. Android does it but you have to go through the developer options, which are not accessible by default, to enable it - in other words, it would be hard to prove that you turned it on by mistake. That said, i don’t have the latest Android version on any device so maybe it’s been completely blocked there too now?! Cheers.
