MIDI data was never this beautiful!

ShowMIDI is an open-source multi-platform GUI application to effortlessly visualize MIDI activity.

Instead of wading through logs of MIDI messages to correlate relevant ones and identify what is happening, ShowMIDI visualizes the current activity and auto-hides what you don't care about anymore. It provides you with a real-time glanceable view of all MIDI activity on your computer.

ShowMIDI is designed to be always on, using the spacebar or play/pause button you can pause the flow and focus on a data snapshot with the latest state of any MIDI entity.

ShowMIDI can be ran as a standalone application that automatically detects all your MIDI devices, or as an AUv3 plugin in your DAW or host to visualize MIDI data in your sessions.

ShowMIDI visualizes:

  • MIDI ports
  • channels
  • program change
  • note on/off
  • channel pressure
  • polyphonic pressure
  • continuous control change
  • pitchbend
  • RPN and NRPN
  • MPE configuration and channel modes

ShowMIDI supports:

  • themes
  • standalone operation
  • AUv3 operation

  • This looks super rad!

  • Wow! That is so cool. Often I'll still need a logger, but this is going to be great for a lot of things.

Timely. I was looking for it a couple days ago.

    Where to report issues?

It works in AUM and some other hosts, but:

    • It crashes apeMatrix
    • I don't see it listed in Logic Pro (resolved)
    • It loads in Loopy Pro but won't display (OSStatus error 10868)

I'm pretty sure @GeertBevin is the developer. The App Store support link takes me here: https://uwyn.com. There's a link to a contact page at the bottom.

    I reported here https://github.com/gbevin/ShowMIDI/issues/21

I reported the apeMatrix crash to apeSoft

  • This is pretty dang cool! Love MTR, looks the dev may have another winner!

  • already used it on desktop and was waiting for iOS release.

Do you use a logger when building patches or..?

    For troubleshooting.
This tool gives a nice overview of what’s happening but sometimes you need to see a series of events in order. For instance if getting stuck notes, to see if a note off message is missing or out of order.

There's also links to forums and discord at the very top of the page

Or just hop on over to GitHub and file an issue.

  • Thanks for the report, it's working for me on Logic, sadly the other two I'm not sure I can do much about, but I'll try digging into Apematrix.

  • this one is great! very handy.

  • Very nice, many thanks!

  • Nice one, thanks dev

Just used this thing to test velocity kb quickly @moforte and others, after we were discussing this the other day. Used pianoteq controlled by vel kb and just playing ariund the range has been at least 20 different numbers between 0 and 127 evenly spread. I didnt note anything down but i was pleasantly surprised guven what had been said about their onky being 5 velocities using tap velocity accelerometer or whatever it is. I think the range is excellent

When I say 20 I mean before I just thought I can’t be bothered there’s going to be as good as full midi really

Interesting. Did you try this though: start with low velocity taps and try to work up to the highest velocity gradually, then come back down again. I just tried (and I fiddled around with the settings controls) but there were definitely loads of times when the recorded velocity was waaaay off what I was intending it to be, and I played a much higher or lower velocity than what I was aiming for.

That said, I still find that playing velocity keyboard to be a fine experience and ultimately that matters much more than what a midi monitor says. I probably also need to get better at tweaking the sliders, it does seem hard to set them up optimally 🤷‍♂️

  • Yeah, agreed. I think velocity keyboard is the best virtual MPE strings layout overall, but also strangely the most challenging to dial in. Strangely because it doesn't present with THAT many options, just still needs fiddling. Took me a bunch of sessions with it to find a sweet spot.

I did yeah, I kind of did slow runs up and down the velocity level. I have definitely had velocities I didn’t intend before but when testing this time I had none really, except little variations within 15 levels or so when I was kind of tuning in to playing. Nothing jumping out. I really don’t know why this is. Another thing is that the other day when I was using y axis for vol or expression with swam and vel kb it was glitching and crackling. I think when I did it with more than one note. I got none of this when testing so perhaps that’s a ram thing. I have noticed finicky stuff in vel kb at various times and become dispirited then come back and it’s been great so I don’t doubt at all different experiences just not sure why. I know where you place it makes a difference.

I think it is hooked up to safari and can tell when I’ve been Googling linnstrument and suddenly gets its shit Together

Yeah, maybe the sliders? I do adjust them sometimes. I just tapped it a load of times lightly until I was ‘in’ and then it consistently played around the same velocity. And I could up it or adjust by increments really quite naturally and I don’t think any real hiccups. There is definitely a finer margin for error than playing somethimg with more give, and I’m not a great musician at all but I do for whatever reason get on well with touch but doesn’t sound like that’s relevant.

So far the only review has been from someone that only gave it 3 stars because they didn't understand what makes ShowMIDI different from traditional MIDI loggers
