How to write midi in drambo from other sequencer?

I couldn't find a video to show me how to write midi sequence from apps like Hilda or digistix to drambo's own sequencer

  • 1 Swipe here to the right if you want to pre-set your pattern length to more than one bar
2 Hit REC on the MIDI Plugin module hosting your sequencer AUv3
3+4 Hit the record, then the play button on the transport bar and stop just before the end of the pattern.

That was going to be my answer, but then I realized that only works for the MIDI FX version of apps. You don't get the midi REC button if you add something like Hilda as a generator. Hilda puts out the midi but it doesn't go to the sequencer.

If you add Hilda as a midi AU you get the REC button but you don't get the audio output.

Following Digistix or Hilda added as generator modules with a MIDI Out module set to MIDI Feedback does the trick.

[edit] I'm having problems with Hilda using this method. It worked once but not since. Other apps I've tried seem fine.

Have you tried just placing a Streambyter MIDI FX after Hilda and record from there?

  • i always use MIDI Tape recorder for that, then crop if needed and export.
btw, not all sequencers (or DAWs) have equally tight timing, but MIDI Tape Recorder's timing is definitely rock solid, so it often gives better results than recording directly from one piece of [hard|soft]ware to another.

does drambo have step in recording from external midi tool? I press my external midi tool 4 times and its in drumbo, without live recording

Actually step 3 (the record button) is not needed, only the REC on the MIDI plugin module needs to be activated before hitting play.

Hilda followed by Drambo MidiFX works fine. If the recorded sequence is a bit garbled then be sure to turn off quantization first.

I did get some initial Drambo problems; the inception Drambo instance asked me to select a folder location on the iPad when I opened it (why?), and then it didn´t record anything. It worked on the next app launch, though (and no more asking of such a folder).

Humm. That works. But I don't understand why it's needed. The midi monitor shows notes coming from Hilda just as it does for other plugins that work. I'm curious what it is about Hilda's output that doesn't want to record without workarounds. I don't see anything odd from the midi monitor.

  • @wim Hard to say, I don't have Hilda here to test.

I add a midi fx plugin that can midi-thru and use the record button on it to record into Drambo’s sequencer. Specifically I use MIDI Tools’ MIDI Monitor. Here’s what it looks like with Pure Acid which is an AUDIO AU that outputs midi.
