Crude Violin to 70s String Synth Sound

edited November 2023 in General App Discussion

Hi,
I am trying to take a crude recording of my violin, and add the right set of fx /plugins - to make it sound more like a 70s string synth sound. I recorded this in Loopy Pro.

I am trying things like an Octave higher, a chorus, compressor - but I'm not getting a vintage string synth sound.

Any thoughts? Any plugin suggestions? THANKS to those that replied. I have tried out the FAC Chorus and Phazer. Very nice!!

PLEASE - no audio to MIDI conversions. I am just trying to find the right combination of plugin /fx

Check out this NEW sample I've added - good /bad /don't quit my day job??

_I'm having problems making the volume "even" before any effects, any suggestions? _

I want to add an "airy" feeling or sound, any suggestion?

Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks!!

  • Try various guitar amp effects

  • FAC Chorus and Phazer will make it sound very synthy. You can also take a section out of the sample that's similar to a saw wave.

Yeah, I'd look for an effect that is designed to make a guitar sound synth-y. The classic hardware example is a Roland GR-300, as best exemplified on the famous riff from Hot Chocolate's song Every 1's a Winner, or some of Andy Summer's work in the Police.

  • Caelum Audio’s “Choric” is also a good choice here.

Absolutely. I’m surprised I don’t see that app mentioned more often, it’s one of my favorites.

  • To my point above, for $2.99 on sale I would give Roxsyn Guitar Synthesizer a try. Maybe in conjunction with phaser/chorus effect.

Have you tried ToneStack? I’m curious about it. O have the free version of ToneX and don’t use it enough to justify paying that much for the full version so for the $2.99 sale price I’m very tempted.

I think this is the most promising approach.

  • Hey Everyone - I already have Roxsyn Guitar Synth. I LOVE IT. I tend to think of it more for uh, funky and gritty stuff.

  • I’ll second (third?) Choric. Definitely worth a try.

Reading more about Roxsyn, doesn't come across as a synth but more a multi-effect, so perhaps not the right tool here, just curious if you've actually tried it or just ruled it out?

To make the volume even, depending, either a clean compressor or Maze Rider might do the trick.

I have tried it (Roxsyn) and run through many (and there are many) of the out of box presets. It's hard to explain, but for a more "fake" or a classic 80s synth or 80s fake string sound or something it would be perfect. What I want is more of a natural string sound, not much fuzz or distortion on it. More smoooOOOoooth and silky, maybe an octave up pitch shifter glimmering on the top type sound. Chorusy - yes but not too much modulation (which some of the 80s syths had). I love the Chow Matrix delay - it'll make a single sound thicker than _________.

  • Thanks for the insight into Roxsyn. There's also PD Space Guitar Synthesizer 2.

Uhhhh yeah, I got that one too. See the problem here?

I do see part of the problem being that you never specified what specific effects you tried before posting. Maybe it's not possible what you want, or you need to keep plugging away with different combinations? I have no further ideas. Good luck my friend. If you do get where you wanted to go, please post here what combination worked for you.
