Ipad Pro M1…Modal…Imac…Thunderbolt…Will it work?

Have a good time, everyone. Tell me. For the sake of experiment, I wanted to connect the synthesizer to the iPad so that it would pass through some sequencer and return to imac in Logic. Just not through the audio output, but through idam (so that there is synchronization). I have an ipad pro on M1. I connect the hub and an inscription appears that thunderbolt accessories are not supported. It turns out that I won't be able to connect in this way? Or is it possible only with the Thunderbolt 4 dock?

It sounds like you may be trying to create a USB system with two hosts, which will not work. And I believe that idam requires a direct connection between the iPad and the computer. Could you diagram this system you describe?

I apologize for the performance of my artwork😊But it looks like this in my head. Do you think there is no possibility of such a connection? There is a dock station with two hosts or a kvm dock. But I'm no longer sure that something will fit.

  • If you mainly need the sequencer midi from the external synth you might try a bluetooth midi connection. Otherwise you will need a multi channel sound device for your laptop.

I would like to use the ipad as a sequencer (eucledian, ooda, zoa and others). But at the same time keep the ability to use the idam connection to work, for example, with drum machines on the iPad (drum computer, playbeat and others). Through an audio connection, this can be done without difficulty, but I would like to use idam (the external synthesizer now uses the ipad as a sequencer via AUM, the sound from the synthesizer via audio goes to the audio interface). But there is naturally no idam. That's why I wonder if it can be done somehow.

It turns out that it is impossible to connect even through a docking station with two hosts?

This is a very unusual dock, with two USB Host ports. Do they claim iPad connectivity? It might work if the vendor has an app that can configure routing between the hosts, similar to the iConnect interfaces. But I do believe idam requires a direct connection between the computer and the iPad, with no dock, etc. in the way. This is because the computer must be the USB master, while the iPad is a slave. This is similar to the way you connect the iPad to the computer for backup.

  • One of the few audio-interfaces that allows two devices to be connected at the same time with audio routing between them is the Lewitt Connect 6.

    https://www.lewitt-audio.com/connect-6

You'll also need a USB Hub/Dongle for the iPad that has an extra USB-C port for connecting it to the interface as well a USB-C PD port for charging the device as additional USB connected devices tend to drain the battery a bit faster.

Since the Connect 6 doesn't have any midi or midi-pass-thru you'd also need some USB->Midi dongles.

Midi from the Mac to the iPad would need to go thru a USB->Midi dongles or over network midi over wifi since IDAM is not a 'pass thru' protocol and requires a direct connection between the Mac and the iPad.

I have no fool-proof solution for this scenario so take this with a grain of salt.

    Cheers!

Thank you. I wrote to the supplier and the manufacturer. Let's see what they say. I've heard about Iconnect, but I'm not sure it will work. Icon has an audio interface with Usb-c connection of several devices and routing in the program. But I'm not sure either.

Hello, Samu. It is interesting. A little above I mentioned the interface from Icon. It looks like with Lewitt. We need to try to figure it out. Routing and management in these devices at least deserves attention.

Yes, but it's worth to remember is that all of them require the configuration to be done using a computer as there are not iOS apps to configure them.

The Connect 6 retains it settings during power-cycles and if it's the only device in the chain the PD port can be used to charge the iPad while in connected. I don't have the Connect 6 but I've tried it with an iPad and a Computer and it worked quite well.

The problem pops up when adding additional usb-devices to a chain, meaning I've not been able to check and use the Connect 6 when it's connected thru a hub to the iPad with additional USB-Midi devices connected.

Also if a person is a guitarist the

Personally I don't use IDAM that much and just airdrop the audio-recordings to the Mac when needed.

Yes, it is possible to drop or, more precisely, just drag through the air. But we are not looking for an easy way. Therefore, for the sake of experiment, you will have to purchase Icon (Lewitt is a bit expensive) and try to configure this connection through the routing matrix (PowerDrive4 Icon software). I think something will work out😊But not exactly. Thank you for your advice and help. I will try and experiment.
