Setup question

edited September 2014 in General App Discussion

I have seen other setup threads and people seem to using PCs alongside their iPads - what apps/ programs /what generally do I need to do this/ what's the benefit.

Thank you all in advance

  • Reason/Ableton. Use them to sequence the iPad synths

  • Sweet as some of the iOS DAWs are, none of them are really even a close feature match against Logic/ProTools/Cubase/Nuendo/Reaper...

Some people also use the ipad to sequence/control software. On the mundane end would be a touch controller for something like abelton or logic. On the more fun end would be using something like Thumbjam or Guitarism to control soft synths on your PC.

  • How does the ipad connect to the pc?

  • Audio interface, headphone jack, MIDI interface, WIFI ->MIDI, bluetooth midi... There are lots of ways, depending on what you're trying to do.

  • Okay cheers for all your help syrupcore!!

  • If I wanted to record synths into my daw - could I it do via camera connection kit and a usb to xlr cable into my audio interface?? Would it affect my signal to noise ratio/ be too noisy?

  • Well you'll need an another audio interface on the end of your CCK (maybe that's what you meant by USB to xlr).

You can also just go from the earphone jack on your iPad to your computer's sound card. Not as high fidelity but totally fine. Mess with your headphone levels to see what sounds best.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't iOS8 allow audio data over a standard USB-Lightning charge cable?

  • edited September 2014

Partly right. Standard charge cable can deliver audio to a player as long as the player does the proper incantations so the Apple end is happy. Think your modern car stereo.

But it won't hook up to a USB audio interface because the charge cable is a B USB client. The CCK OTOH is an A USB host and has the magic wand built in.

Update: the new audio feature is specifically targeted to hifi headphones and only sends mono back to the iThing. No good for us.

  • Thanks for all your help! Much appreciated!
