How to use MIDI Tape Recorder for midi playback?
I have set up MIDI Tape Recorder as midi input, imported midi file, set Destinations to apps…
I expect it will not work in SoftDrummer, I think that functionality was removed (?) at some point. Alas, how cool would that be! But with Slammer, I believe it should be possible. But no signal, no sound… why?
Any help with this will be highly appreciated!

@MFNK : are you sure that you are sending the right notes to slammer and on the right midi channel?
Are you seeing MTR’s play head move when you start playback?
I only see notes in MTR in the first few measures and the play head is way beyond that.
Load a midi monitor AU and make it a destination for MTR and check that it is sending out its midi.
I use MTR in loopy pro without issue.
As a test load in an additional AU as a destination like a synth that responds to all notes.
MIDI channel set to "all" and Slammer occupy the full keyboard, ie. every octave has the same sounds.
MTR playhead moves ahead. Blinking green and all, as you can see. But maybe it is something with the midi files still. However, when I sent to a friend with EZDrummer on desktop, he said the midi played just fine.
I have DM’d you a sample, if you could check it out on LP. Thanks! ☺️
MTR sends each track out on a different cable. In Loopy you need to set the cables up.
Also, your mtr sequence has no end in sight but looks like it has data only in the first four measures. You need to set the loop end point.
The midi file that I imported was a complete drum track, but I realise that there must be an issue there somehow. I get a few notes playing in MTR, triggering Slammer and other AUs, but only sporadic, definitely not a full drum track.
Drum midi files courtesy of buymeacoffee.com/invisible.drummer and I hoped they would work on iPad / Loopy Pro.
Midi is midi, no?
Confirmed MTR is working with another midi file, downloaded from another source.
What is then the issue with these midi files, which work in EZDrummer, but not in MTR/LP…?
MIDI is MIDI. Not sure what that means. But your file seems to have midi only in the forst few measures.
There are a couple of different formats of midi file and MTR may just be reading the the first for tracks of the MIDI file you imported.
The issue (other than not having routed the midi cables) is unrelated to Loopy. It looks like MTR only has 4 bars of notes on cables 2,3,4 when importing this but the sequence length is long.
Do you have another sequencer that can import midi? LK or Atom 2?
I tried with LK, same issue, not playing the file.
Then again, another midi file (from a different source) worked just fine in MTR with my setup, so I’m back to blaming the drum midi files I'm trying. My friend said they worked well in EZD3, and I thought midi was universal. But perhaps I need to research this more.
Down to my last pennies, not wanting to invest in more midi playback AUs until LP adds midi itself, and then upgrade.
Here's one of the midi files from Invisible Drummer. Looks and plays fine in GarageBand. But I want it to play in Loopy Pro... Hopefully this screen might help someone identify why this midi file won't play properly in MTR. :fingers_crossed:
What does it look like in LK after you import?
What other apps do you have that import MIDI?
Does EZ Drummer give you export options for the MIDIMFile format/type?
Works in LK! I just didn’t figure out the cables prior. Now I have “Bulls On Parade” routed to Slammer and Things.
Not exactly the same drum sound as on the album, but with some tweaking could prove experimentally fun. 🤩
I would like to find out why this midi is not working in MTR, though, and see if it can be rectified. MTR looks super simple, and for a simpleton like me that is perfect.
I don’t have many other midi apps on iPad. I’m used to Mac, fiddling with Ableton Live, but when my MacBook died and someone hacked/stole my Live Suite license, I gave up.
Two years later, Loopy Pro made me a believer again! Got a new audio interface for guitar and mic, saving up for a eDrumin midi converter device to get my Roland drums into iPad, for complete band recording sessions.
Re: EZD, I was a fan back in the days, had many EZX packs (courtesy of Audionews…), but later I switched over to AddictiveDrums. Something about ease of use, presets, etc. Not sure how EZD would export midi. I don’t want to bother friends about this, although they have EZD3, I just need to find a workflow that works for me. GarageBand doesn’t have much in terms of export also. But I would be tempted to look for other (simple) midi apps if that gives me better control, and it works. BeatMaker3 I got to play a sampled Ludwig set with my AKAI MPD218. But it wasn’t really as simple as I wanted, and I never got it working in Loopy Pro, so… SoftDrummer to the rescue!
Ps. Here is my music category, not much useful in terms of midi, I think…?
@MFNK: do a web search to learn about the different formats of MIDI files. I am guessing that MTR when importing MIDI only imports the first 4 tracks of a multi-track midi file.
You might want to contact MTR's developer and provide the MIDI file for him to look at.
Yup, that’s what i thought too. No harm in providing feedback! @GeertBevin
Anyhow, after using the trial version of LK, I’m officially looking for the next simplest midi player app.
Even if it costs a few pounds, we can consider. Everything for the cause.
Here are the apps I actually use, more or less. Had some from before, got a few more on sale now. I ended up giving most of my money to Klevgränd lately. Planning to overhaul my studio with more of their apps. Wanting Reamp and GotoEQ, might get the first one on sale and the other when I can afford. Not sure if that could be my whole suite, but yeah. 👍
BeatMaker3 is too complex for my taste, but I may want to use the Ludwig set. Any replacement for this?
Any properly sampled acoustic drum kits that I can play with fingerpads or eDrumin would be awesome!
I have looked at FAC drumkit, DrumPerfect Pro, Digistix2 and others, but not feeling it. Wish the midi feature for triggering sounds on SoftDrummer would work, that would likely be plenty good enough for me. But I guess we can’t have the full cake and eat it too… We’re talking rainbows and unicorns!
Ps. Just learning the ropes around the forum, so please forgive me for overly sharing.
This is a lot to read through, and I sadly don't have a lot of time to spare right now.
MTR only supports MIDI Type 1 files, this is in order to preserve all the channel information. Type 0 files merge all the MIDI information into a single track. Please double check which MIDI Type your file might be.
