MacBook Pro M3 - Music Production - How much unified memory would you recommend ?

edited November 2023 in Other

I’m thinking of upgrading my intel MacBook pro for a M3 pro max
Don’t have too many complaints with my old laptop , but my old man wants a new laptop , so I’m taking this excuse to buy me new one  and exchange my old MacBook ,
Also it has basically has no value ( relative to what I brought it for) for trade in

Yes , so I don’t have experience with silicon macs
I feel like I’m also missing out on apps which are silicon compatible

There are so many configs on Apple Store ?
How much unified memory would you recommend for music production ?
I intend to use for a minimum of 4-5 years

Currently I’m thinking 36 or 48 .
64 I’m thinking might be overkill

I’m not mentioning cpu and gpu since Apple Store “kinda” auto selects this config based on unified memory

  • Depends how sample based you work. You can easily gobble up loads of ram using instruments like Kontakt. If you’re more a synth person, processing power is more important. I’m happy I use a PC, so I can have loads of ram cheaply -and- loads of cores. :)

  • I’ve been just fine with 16GB the last few years in professional studio, memory management is one of the strong points of the M series Macs. Unless you’re loading big orchestral sample packs, I don’t think you need to spend insane amounts of money on RAM like with the Intel based systems.

I see what you’re saying , 16Gb on silicon is way more efficient than intel..
