Not a Cello: NS2 obsidian cello patch, work in progress patch.
This is a work in progress proof of concept for a new cello patch I’m working on in NS2 Obsidian for a new project.
It is made of samples from a ruined cello found at a thrift store and samples from pianobook.
It was recorded in one take (except the strings that I added after) played on akai mini 2.
There are still a few issues like some bad phasing, but I'm confident it will eventually sound good enough.

That’s a lovely sampled cello… no obvious defects to the casual listener. It sounds very true to the texture of a recorded cello. The low notes are wonderful.
I hope you export the instrument and share it on PatchStorage in the NS2 section
since there are no IP issues.
Sorry had corrupted upload issue on YT. It should be fixed
Yes. Much better.
Thanks. I can ear tons of issues. The damn phasing is driving me crazy, have to find the right balance between the layers in obsidian and rework the loop points amongst other things.
That’s exciting to imagine it getting better. Thumbjam (IAA), SWAM Cello, GeoShred’s GeoCellos and Naada Cellos… we finally have a nice set of options.
I think I did all I could with the phasing issue in my last update. It would require re recording my cello, but it is now on the other side of the Atlantic so that will have to wait.
I assigned to archer speed mock-up to the keyboard velocity, tweaked on of the LFOs for a gentle detune effect over time, also assigned to a knob.
For now, all I need to do is really work the loop points and it should be done.
Can you play fast passages with it and keep the realism, Joseph?
Yes but not too fast. I’ll upload a demo tomorrow with the effect of the simulated bow speed.
To achieve fast playing I’d need to re record the cello almost staccato and put it on a new layer. For now I’m cheating* with sample start which does the job.
