What is your Black Friday haul? Why did you choose these apps?

There is some conversation in the app sales thread, but I think it's better to discuss it in a separate thread. Why did you choose those apps? How are you going to use them? How much did you spend total?

I've bought the following:

  • Baby Audio Transit - I'm working my way towards playing live and it should come in handy, plus people praise it as a decent multi effect when you don't overdo it.
  • KNOCK - the demos sound good, and overall it seems to be a simple effect for simple people like me.
  • DDMF NoLimits 2 - again, a simple good sounding limiter with LUFS metering.
  • DDMF MagicVerb - it's hideous, but I don't have any reverb that would be as good for creating natural spaces as this one.

Overall I've realized I favor either simple plugins that do one thing well or sometimes multi effects. Not surprising for someone who's used to guitar pedals, I guess. Overall I'm happy with this sale, I've got everything I need now, the only currently existing apps I can see myself buying in the future are all in the Moogerfooger bundle.

What about you?

I've been slowly moving from PC to my first iPad since August. After initial period, I was now pretty clear on what I wanted to buy during BF. I'm mainly guitarist which trying to learn some piano basics so list of purchased applications correspond to this.

    • Lumbeat apps: I'm glad I bought iBassist and Funk Drummer, I hoped for Soft Drummer, Rock Drummer or Afro Latin.
    • Tonestack Pro + Gold'O'Pot: I have a ToneX and needed something for covering drives, modulations and delays. For now I'm saturated
    • Tonality: Must have for my learning of piano
    • Neo Soul Keys 2 + some IAPs: I love sound of Rhodes so this was a clear choice
    • Pure Synth Platinum Factory IAP: So many good sounds I could not resist
    • King Of Digital synth: Real bargain for sound and price
    • Ravenscroft Piano: I tried also Just Piano, Yamaha C5 from soundfont and Pianoteq - Ravenscroft is a winner for my ears
    • Heavy Brass: Many possibilities, I like it.
    • BeatHawk: Mixed feelings. I kept acoustic drums and percussion IAPs, returned both acoustic pianos. I don't like UI and it crashes sometimes.
    • EOS2 reverb: I'm a huge ValhallaDSP fan so this was another must have for me.
  • First year that I don't buy nothing....and it is because Logic Pro.

  • I didn’t buy a whole lot this year but here’s what I did get:

Jazz Drummer - Been wanting it for so long and recently started acquiring the Lumbeats apps. I make experimental music that often has an avant-garde jazz influence and it’s great for that.

Knock - another I’ve wanted for a while and was waiting on a sale for.

Shaper - it was too cheap to pass up and the unique modulation implementation.

    NoLimits2 - obvious reasons and it’s great.

Lastly Fundamental 2 - the first one is an all time favorite but with it gone from the App Store I wanted a more reliable option.

  • Hilda synth - I wanted something focused on West Coast sound that wasn't a patch for Drambo or miRack, but rather a solid app. And after Bram introduced Buchla skin, everything came together. My first purchase this year, lol.

  • DDMF NoLimits 2 - again, a simple good sounding limiter with LUFS metering.

Is this worth upgrading? I have the first version. Seems like the LUFS metering is new for version 2. Any other differences?

    iPad:

    • Volt (synth)
    • OODA (sequencer)
    • Blip Box (drum synth)
    • Phase Monkey (phase distortion synth)
    • Vatanator Pro (groovebox/sequencer)
    • Drum-80 (Simmons drums emulator)
    • NFM (FM synth)
    • Mela 3 (multipurpose – synth / FX / MIDI FX)
    • Mela 4 (multipurpose – synth / FX / MIDI FX)
    • Nano Studio 2 (DAW)
    • Waldorf Attack Drums (actually a groovebox)

    desktop:

    • Hex Drum (Simmons drums emulator)
    • ImpOSCar2 (synth)

most of apps that i grabbed either work both on iPad and Silicon Mac, or have desktop version.
the intention is obvious – i do music on the go quite a lot, thus want moar software unification.

    sequencers/grooveboxes – because it's never too many sequencers/grooveboxes.

some apps just were on too good offer (e.g. Volt or ImpOSCar2).

also, got NS2 for no reason, just always liked how it looks. (and it turned to be working on desktop too)

That’s exactly what I did. I use miRack extensively for everything (sometimes drambo) but I saw that Buchla skin and immediately bought it. Lovely synth.

I also got SunVox this time.

  • I went a little crazy…. I got:
    1. BAM
    2. Hilda
    3. Cyclop
    4. Thesys
    5. Appraven lifetime iap
    6. Salome
    7. King of Digital
    8. Octachron
    9. Pro R-2
    10. FAC bundle.

  • I actually picked a couple of things that I wasn't expecting I'd want for the desktop:

Reason's Chord Sequencer which I think has a nice chord set concept complimentary to Scaler 2.

    https://www.reasonstudios.com/shop/rack-extension/chord-sequencer/

I also picked up Unify which @enkaytee mentioned in the desktop deals thread. Along with that, I picked up its "Back To The 80s" library which has some amazing Vital presets. The developer and also the creator of the library/presets actually did a live YouTube cast about the library with Steve Porcaro as a guest!

Finally, I had to pick up RipX pro after I saw a couple of videos about it. I already have Stagecraft's own stem separator that I picked up for $15 months ago, but RipX just seemed worth having in addition to. Mostly, I want these for using with zPlane's deCoda for song analysis. RipX can do a lot of what zPlane does, but I have found that zPlane's drawing with midi seems to be more accurate upon export.

The last two were the bigger expenses, but worth it. I picked up a few rompler/synths from Audiolatry. I think I'm all set for a long time.

You made the right decision getting Koala!

  • For music, only Mela 4. The modularity is exciting, and Mela 2 has been a consistent go-to for me for a while.

I also picked up the game Dawnbreaker, which is becoming an addiction.

  • I picked up Electric Vintage, Sparkle, and Brainz (Tera Pro IAP)Was hoping Buttersynth would’ve gone on sale but I’ll pick it up full price soon as I can afford to…after that and Stria I’m done buying apps for a long time at least until new ones launch 😎

Yeah the Drumazon 2 is amazing! It sounds as good as the real deal to me.
    D16 rocks!

EV is phenomenal and Brainz too… Sparkle is pretty cool in standalone but as an AU in GarageBand not so much . I think it’s one of those that would be better in something like AUM

Probably right about Sparkle. Not sure how hard it is to route a source to a target in GB but it’s fairly simple in AUM.

Their Accordion app and iVCS3 are my personal favorites from them but EV is a close third. It sounds excellent.

Yeah my initial issue was user error but eventually I realized the issue as an AU is because you can’t do it as an FX unit in GB; it loads but doesn’t work as intended for the same specific reason MIDI is wonky in GB

That’s the thing I don’t like about GB. Wish they’d implement midi fx

Based on a comment someone made the other day, if u remember right you can load apematrix as an IAA inside AUM, right? I never use Garageband, but I think you can load IAA in it too? In that case @Fear2Stop could maybe consider getting apematrix in the current sale. It's only $6 and so good as an experimental host, like AUM but different, with some huge pros compared to aum like the easy built in modulation system. At that price, hard to go wrong and almost guaranteed to turn out useful for various things.

Yeah I’m definitely going to look into it. And yeah this is one aspect of GB I don’t like . I wonder if I’d have a similar issue with Stria?

I may look into Cubasis next time it’s on sale . I like GB for the touch instruments (mainly bass and drums ) but there’s things I dont like about it

  • Updated my desktop Sugar Bundle from Sugar Bytes, bought the electric pianos from Pianoteq, and got Noinputmixer for iOS.

Just got to finish some music with it now…

I'm sure you've noticed that probably almost no one on this forum uses Garageband! It's partly a kind of snobbishness, I'm sure, but seems there are valid reasons for it too, maybe consider jumping ship! I bet if you did a poll it would show that only a few percent of ppl here are using Garageband regularly, if ever.

Oh, I am eventually. Some of the reasons why I still use it deal with familiarity, but also , again, the touch bass and drums ; although we’ve moved back into a more synth based sound, for the tracks where we use live instrument overdubs (we have a guy that plays multiple instruments, same with my daughter ) I’ll do the demos where I do everything. But yeah I’m starting to outgrow it …if this weekend goes well I might just go ahead and get Cubasis 3

@HotStrange would definitely endorse that choice I reckon. I wonder if LP4I would also be a good choice for you if you like touch instruments? Might be worth grabbing for a month to try out

Only issue with Logic Pro is its iPad only and my contributions are done on my phone

I’m one of the odd ones. I have 800+ GarageBand project files. The limitations suck, but it’s fun to play around. And now I can open them in Logic when I hit a wall.

There's a lot to be said anyway with putting up with limitations, sticking with what you know and finding workarounds I guess. There are always tradeoffs!

I picked up Electric Vintage, Sparkle, and Brainz (Tera Pro IAP)Was hoping Buttersynth would’ve gone on sale but I’ll pick it up full price soon as I can afford to…after that and Stria I’m done buying apps for a long time at least until new ones launch 😎

Was gonna ask you how you’re liking them so far? You’ve been looking forward to it for a while so I’m hoping you’re enjoying them!

Damn. You may be able to request a refund if you can’t use it and then use that money for something else?

That’s the thing I don’t like about GB. Wish they’d implement midi fx

Ah yeah, damn, forgot about that

  • Had my eye out for a bunch of things that were trumped by a bunch of other things ..

    • Rymdigare (purely out of curiosity)
    • The Erik Sigth bundle: Elsa, Strng, Shapesynth, Frekvens (because I was impressed with Rymdigare .. may or may not have been on sale) .. also picked up Ström for free to capture samples from
    • Ooda (because sequencer)
    • SynthScaper (because all of Igor Vasiliev’s apps are exciting)
    • GlitchCore (yes)
    • Hilda (of course)
    • Brusfri (noise reduction)
    • Xynthesizr (.. again .. because sequencer)
    • NFM (because I like Mela 4 so much)

That might be it, or at least the highlights .. still kicking around whether to pick up Borsta and Slammer .. and maybe Soundscaper
