Silent night Jazz piano improv (stacked Ravenscroft + Pianoteq pianos)

Playing around with stacking different pianos to come up something better. This one is stacking Ravenscroft and a low volume Pianoteq Stienway D felt piano sound EQ'ed up. I like the character of the ravenscroft, and adding the pianoteq piano at a low volume gave that more body. The velocity layers of the Pianoteq is way more, so maybe combining these two may work out. I rasied the pitch of the pianoteq to 441Hz to match pitch better. This is just a quick (and sloppy) improv to silent night, thumbed in a iBassist acoustic bass too. How does this solo piano combo sound?

  • Sounds lovely.

  • I think the tone sounds wonderful. I mostly liked your take on the song. If you had superimposed some old record scratches over it, I would have thought I was listening to an old Duke Ellington record.

You should really set up a SoundCloud account. I think a lot of people would really enjoy your music.

  • Oh yeah… I completely forgot to focus on the piano realism and got into the wonderful arrangement. You passed the
    McD Musical Test:

take a song I[ve grown to dread and make me love it again

The inventions you added are like you channel the amazing Vince Guaraldi who created all the music for the Charlie Brown
cartoons… many of which became Holiday staples and one is something that teaches young piano students to play syncopations if they didn’t study Joplin.

I also hope you start a SoundCloud account and share your arrangements of public domain tunes or songs so cleverly arranged that their software can’t tell it’s a cover of copyright protected material… when I dabble in that grey area I change the name and don’t state the melody but improvise (clumsily) over the chords.

Keep ‘em coming… there is a small but grateful audience here for this type of performance… inventive and executed with taste.

  • Thank you for the kind feedback @bluegroove, @Paulieworld, @McD and @GeoTony. I plan to start a SoundCloud account at the start of 2024. Really trying to figure out myself musically, maybe something like that will give me a direction. Merry Christmas to you all.

  • I’m a real sucker for piano. That is a very interesting “patch”. Lacks a little bass in the AirPods Pro 2. But I’m nitpicking.
The harmony is absolutely brillant, and I hate that song. But I love your rendition.

Thanks @jo92346. I appreciate having another pair or ears on the bass. The bass eq was a real debate for me. On my headphones it was too heavy, on my iPad speakers and laptop to thin, and in my car speakers it was muddy. I ended up going with my headphones using the Morphit app for EQing, I’m studying some mixing tutorials to learn more.

  • @Dav After long hesitations I came to trust the auto mastering in Logic and do all mixing with the AirPods (I travel a lot and not having to take the sennheiser or the beyerdynamics with me makes my life a little bit easier). My music sounds more consistent through different systems now including the shitty Apple wired earbuds.

  • That’s some nice harmonization going on there, and definitely has that feel of yesteryear that others have noted. Great playing!

  • Lovely playing @Dav! Sounds good through my old speakers.
    Merry Christmas to you.

  • @Dav impressive playing and I loved your improvised take on this classic, which I normally couldn’t sit all the way through, but you’ve seasoned it just right.

The stacked pianos sound great to my ears, but you could have used just Ravenscroft and it would still have sounded great. All it takes is a great player, and that you are!

Wow! Lovely, Dav. Everyone should be listening to this who loves jazz. Guaraldi, yes, but your own invention. Very swinging feeling. We want more! Stacking pianos is fun. Piano and EP, too. It’s great to have Pianoteq now. I seem to be using it in combination with Ravenscroft, too.

HH to you and yours, our friend. (You could add trumpet, right?)
