AUv3 Midi Keyboard with latching and MIDI input?
I am looking for a Midi Keyboard plugin with the following functionality:
- Accepts MIDI input and shows the active notes as pressed keys.
- Supports latching.
The idea is to add latching functionality to my Arturia Keystep. I do want the notes that are currently held displayed.

If one exists I haven't heard of it. I tried the ones I have: KB-1, Xequence AUv3 Keys, miRack, Drambo, Surface Builder, and AUM. None fit the bill.
Thanks for testing @wim. I tried exactly the same ones. Tried LK as well. Although there is an input for the keyboard controller, it seems to do nothing.
I thought the Keystep had a latch/hold button? It’s been a while since I had one though. I know my MiniLab3 does.
Trying to think of an app that has both of those features and not just one or the other. LK has a hold/latch feature. You could use that and run the midi through Tonality (which displays the active notes). The free app Plutony does this as well and it’s also AUV3.
Thanks for the ideas. I will check it out. Unfortunately the KeyStep firmware has not been thought through well. That hold button only works for the built in arpeggiator.
That’s a pet peeve of mine. If you’re gonna go through the trouble just make it work both ways haha.
Lemme know if it works for you! That’s my setup for that exact thing and it’s been good for me thus far.
Plutony? I cannot find such an app. Must be either a different name, or a very old app that has been pulled from the store.
Anyway. My current plan is now to create a Mozaic script that combines the latch and display functionality.
My mistake, spelling error. It’s Plotony. Same dev as the Modulin synth app.
There’s a Moziac script for latch that @wim made for me that’s excellent but it doesn’t display the name. He may be able to help you though.
I love Xequence AU Keys, but unfortunately it is still missing both these useful features. A Latch mode in particular is something that really every keyboard app needs @SevenSystems we're begging you lol, think of the children!

OK, found it. Lovely app. I like that lissajous scope and the chord detection.
Is it on Patchstorage and what is the scripts name ? His scripts are great and the code is fairly easy to understand. I already modded his “MIDI Clock Tool” for my needs.
Chiming in with @Gavinski and @HotStrange: YES please!
Latching support will be available in the "main" Xequence app very shortly, and if I'm not broke before then, I'll try to port it to the AU plug-in soon after 😉
Ah god... Sorry to hear struggles continue. Fingers crossed on all fronts then, most of all your wellbeing.
Take good care and I hope things will get better soon. On the app side of things I do not have any problem with getting these features as a (paid) new version or an IAP of your apps. All the best!
I’m not sure if it’s on patch storage or not, maybe he can chime in. If not, I can send it to you via PM when I get a chance!
@Gavinski @catherder thanks, I'm exaggerating slightly, it's not as bad as it might seem! However I must admit that music app development, while being one of the most sophisticated things you can do in this world, is at the same time one of the worst paid, astoundingly 😂
I think I found that script @catherder and @HotStrange: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/1246817/#Comment_1246817
I never published it so it's not well commented or anything and may not be the best code.
I thought about Mozaic, but displaying the playing notes in Mozaic isn't something I could envision working very well. There are enough pads to display one octave of notes in a sort of clunky way, but a way to cover multiple octaves wasn't apparent to me.
Understand. My plan is to only display the latched notes on the pads. Touching the pad will unlatch the note. I actually do not want to use the script as a kind of MIDI controller, but more of a MIDI utility that helps me to add the missing latch function to input from my KeyStep or other sources. This setup means a maximum of 16 latched notes or, because I hardly ever enable more than 5 notes, 8 notes and have the other row of pads available for other functionality.
I will mainly use this together with Arpeggiators like Bleass Arpeggiator.
I do have a "latch" MIDI AUv3, but the missing display makes it difficult to use it, because you are in trouble when you simply forget a note that you enabled.
Sorry the code isn't better commented. I you have any questions about it feel free to PM me.
Thanks. I was gonna dig it out as well but figured you may be able to offer more insight since I’m an idiot regarding any kind of coding lol.
FWIW, it’s still working well for me.
Thanks for the kind offer. I have already started my own project. The note display is already working well. I will put it on Patchstorage once it is finished - hopefully soon…
Oh you got it working? Nice! Would love to see it if you can post it up there.
