My new EP, Normal Doubt, on Bandcamp!
I finally finished my EP and got It up on Bandcamp. It's four tracks of electronic music mixed with samples, mostly my own sampled instruments, voices, and the like.
Made partially on the iPad (some started in GarageBand), in Ableton, Logic for Mac, and using a Digitone, OP-Z, and maybe some others—it's been a while since I started.
The tracks have been done for a while, but while I was very happy with the mixing, their relative volumes were up and down. I ran them through Logic Pro's new mastering plugin and it seems to have made everything better, and nothing worse. I just used the default "transparent" setting.
Anyway, here you go! You can listen three times free. I'm not sure why it's not embedding the player in this post, so you might have to click to hear it.

Comments welcome, good and bad!
I enjoyed 2 and 4. If Harm Home had some kind of weird indie R&B male vocals…I could hear it popping up on some playlists. And the German (sounded like a French yéyé Serge Gainsbourg lady) girl ad lib on the shoes track was very well arranged with the track.
I was on my phone so the first track had some slightly harsh midrange frequencies with that solo brass instrument but I really don’t like how phone speakers sound for anything. Even pop songs have frequencies that grate me. So it’s not an issue, I just wanted to add more thoughts.
Overall, the mixing is very good, I would be happy with it too.
Have you ever heard Know Doubt (mid-2000s) by Cex? Not even too similar but I suddenly remembered that EP which is also somewhat electronic and experimental and has some voices and even some vocals. Weirdly that EP (only about 20 minutes long) isn’t available on streaming but it’s on YouTube:
Anyway, despite being different in energy and style, the quality of the arrangements and the general broad strokes genre adjacency drew a parallel in my mind, which is definitely a compliment. Maybe the title made me think of it too. But anyway Know Doubt is a very influential piece of work for me and I enjoyed your album. Nice work!
Thanks for this excellent feedback, and I’m happy you found something you like. Definitely going to check the Cex track now.
I will need to double check, but I’m pretty sure that the first track, Elk Mountain, was the only one I didn’t run through the Logic mastering tool. But I have listened to that mix on almost every kind of device, from phones to cheap speakers to playing it on a super-fancy setup in a hi-fi store. I guess the fact that everything apart from the trumpet part sounded ok is a good thing!
The reason I skipped the mastering plugin on that track is that it sounded better without it. The plugin diminished the sense of space, which for me is a big part of the vibe of the track.
Thanks again!
Edit: I’m really digging this Cex EP.
Dude. I love that EP. It’s like a jam band that works in IDM. It’s been very inspiring to me over the years. And a nice variety across the tracks yet it’s decently cohesive. And only 20 minutes! It’s a shame it’s not on streaming. I used to have the physical CD back in the day.
But, again, really nice work on your album. Keep it up!
Excellent EP, very quirky, great use of voices and instruments… liked it a lot👍
Thanks!
Short and sweet, just like I like it. This is excellent stuff and I absolutely love that album cover as well. Congrats on the release!
Really good. Although completely different, the production reminded me a bit of later Talk Talk
Thanks! That’s a huge compliment. I love Mark Hollis and Talk Talk, and the space he leaves in his compositions.
👍
Yes, that solo album too, His magnum opus I think.
I have that one on both vinyl and CD. It’s so so good.
