iPad sometimes not recognizing SSD.

Alright so I recently got a 1 TB SSD to offload my GM and Virsyn apps to clear up some storage. Everything worked fine on that front but now the drive will not show up when connected through a powered USB hub. I thought it was because my other hub was old, worn out, and outdated so I ordered a new one from Anker that specifically stated it had high speed data transfer for SSDs, yet my iPad still will not recognize it.

If I plug the drive directly into the iPads USB C port it shows up and works well but nothing happens otherwise. I’ve tried restarting and everything else I can think of to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas? Is this a known issue with SSDs and iPads? The hub has an SD card slot. Would I be better off using that (if PSP even works with SD cards that is)?

Any help appreciated. I’m new to using SSD with iPads but I’m starting to think I would be better off returning it and using that same money to upgrade to a 1 TB iPad. If I finance it I only have to pay the taxes up front which equates to not much more than I paid for this SSD.

~~It may need more power than your iPad is providing and needs a powered hub to operate correctly. That is the case on my lightning-equipped iPad.

SD cards will be slower and less reliable than an SSD:~~

    I mis-read your message.

I‘d go with the 1TB iPad... if you have that tax option.
Tbh I have low confidence in Apple‘s recent file systems (let alone 3rd party handling) and you‘ll loose SSD speed on any USB connection anyway ;)

EDIT: the below may well be irrelevant given as you already said, it works when plugged direct, just not through the powered hub,, so not sure.
    You may happily ignore below...

EDIT: I have this with both 1TB SSD and 2TB SSD, neither need power, both work with un-powered hubs but they do need re-indexing when not detected by the iPad.

I have issues with ExFat SSD drives being detected on iPad, that can only be resolved by plugging in to Mac OS and waiting for it to automatically but slowly in the background do some checking repairing. The only way I know is by monitoring the processes in Activity.

Then when I plug in to ipad it is fine again, however, because the ipad has no umount functionality, it seems the indexing is easily corrupted half the time. and so the process gets repeated. to be as safe as i can i have to power down the ipad before ejecting.

this problem never occurs with Fat32. you can hot plug all day, robust as hell.

I imagine it also wouldn't happen with APFS as that's the native Mac format nowadays, but I haven't tested this.

Are you only using ipad? Do you have a desktop you can reformat the SSD drive away from ExFat (if indeed it is ExFat)?

EDIT: I think we covered a lot of this in a @Gavinski thread?

  • Yeah I have a similar issue with a flash drive that is ExFat. And formatting to APFS made it more consistent.

I’ve only been having problems with ExFat since iOS 17 I think.

Yeah I’m thinking the same. Was hoping to avoid upgrading iPads because the process can be tedious when transferring everything, but looks like that’s gonna be the best and easiest option after all.

Unfortunately I’m iOS only. I was kinda afraid that was the issue.

For all the troubles it seems like it may be easier to just return and upgrade iPads. I’m gonna have to eventually anyway, so might as well go balls out get the 2 TB so I don’t have any worries 😂

Thanks though! iOS is such a PITA with anything files or storage related. SSD, iCloud, Files apps, etc. all a headache.

What format is your SSD? Maybe it's worth trying changing to Fat32 format if you're using some other format? I know that's a pain, but could be worth it.

I’m iOS only unfortunately. I was afraid of this issue when I first unplugged it since there’s no way to actually eject the SSD properly.

No Mac or Windows device you could borrow to try a few things? If you're going to be relying on an SSD it would be a good idea to have something available to check / repair the disk if anything starts to go bad. External drive support on iOS is far from trustworthy IMO.

I do have that option, but my wife and I live a fair bit away from our family and friends since we moved. At minimum it would be a 45-ish minute drive, and they use theirs for gaming and for work so we couldn’t do more than use it while there, no borrowing. I have family I could borrow from but that’s 2+ hours away.

I agree it’s nice to have a desktop or laptop for these things, and my wife and I are planning on getting one in the coming months but not soon enough lol.

I think I should probably go with my original plan and just upgrade iPads. If I return the SSD it’ll only be an additional $20-$25 to upgrade to a 1 TB Pro.

Probably should’ve done that from the start, but my curiosity got the best of me. Also not wanting to transfer things to a new ipad + buy a new case.

  • Best Buy or Apple Store?

  • I have problems with this constantly, I just gave up, lol
It connect at first, then randomly drop connection within 5 minutes
Sometimes when i replug in after the first fail it tends to work

I have tried multiple hubs, SSDs, usb cables and power supply

Yeah that seems to be the case here too. I’d rather just not deal with the constant headache of it all.

Apple's strategy is working. They're smart people.

Yep. Immediately after I posted that earlier I told my wife “damnit they got me again” lol

Sorry I meant going to one of those places to use Disk Utility on a Mac to format your drive to APFS. lol oops I barely explained my idea. My bad.

No prob. I’ve already initiated the return and am just gonna focus on upgrading my iPad for now. I should’ve done that to begin with honestly.

  • Format to APFS.

ExFAT and FAT32 will only cause you headaches on iOS.

I’ve already returned it. As mentioned above I don’t have a desktop so it’s more of a pain than it’s worth, imo.

Sounds like a good plan 😏😏😏

  • I’ve tried formatting to APFS before, that solves nothing
Apple needs to get this stable

This has probably been said but I’m to lazy to read all the posts right now, 😝. The external drive might need a power source, like a powered usb hub. Some smaller drives might work without external power, but some require it since the idevices do not emit enough power to run items over a certain threshold. I don’t know what the threshold is… but there is one. Hope this helps.

Haha yeah I mentioned in the original post I was using it with a powered hub 😉 but like I said, I’ve already returned it and I’m going with my original plan of upgrading iPads. Thanks though!
