  • 😢 Fuck! I'm a big Moody Blues fan, so this is a massive gut punch. Yeah he was pushing 80, but it doesn't suck any less, does it?

Denny and Paul did a fun album of Buddy Holly songs. I think they did it in a crappy home made shed studio on Paul's 4 track and then did orch overdubs at Abbey Road or somewhere like that. Or maybe the orch overdubs were for the US market and added later? Not sure, but I had both UK and US albums and the mixes were quite different on some tracks:

This is definitely on my "to listen to" list now.

I'm glad Denny was co-writer of "Mull Of Kintyre"... would have made him a fair bit of money over the years.

I agree with that mate. :)

  • Saw this earlier. I’m a big fan of Wings so really hated to see this. He co-wrote a handful of their songs as well.

Same here, mate. Very sad news. I was raised with the Moodies among other bands. In my middle school years I used to get all my homework done in the evenings whilst wearing my Dad's headphones listening to his Moodies collection.

  • @simon I think I heard a long long time ago that when Denny was skint he sold the rights to Mull to Macca, so after that he will have made nothing from the songwriting royalties.
I may well be wrong though😂

    Could be.

Last I heard Macca owned all the Buddy Holly rights. He bought them back in the 1970s I think. This album, and the "Buddy Holly Day" celebrations were all part of Macca getting Holly more recognition while also making his asset more valuable. I guess some of these old rockers (like Macca, Bowie and The Stones) have learnt a thing or two about the business side of things.

  • R.I.P. Denny Laine!

This song is too significant for me. As a kid, I started to love music because of songs like this one.

  • Without Denny I there would’ve been no Band on the Run album. I appreciate him.

Yeah, he was a big part of all the good Wings songs. In general I think McCartney’s solo career (I include Wings here) has been kind of meh, but Denny was always there for the best stuff.

Btw, he left the Moody Blues before they were the band most people think of as The Moody Blues… they were a fairly straight R&B band when Laine was in them. The move towards prog and psychedelia happened after he left … the band most people think of as The Moody Blues came together after he left.

“Days of Future” passed and later are essentially a different band.

Indeed. They only released the one album with Denny, and then there was about a 3 year gap before the first album with the new lineup.

Question is one of the greatest songs ever! from Justins detuned 12 string guitar riff, John Lodges pumping bass line and the ethereal Mellotron strings in the chorus played by Mike Pinder!

Really? I agree about Wings being great (and Denny being a big part of that) but i absolutely love at least a handful of Paul’s solo albums. McCartney 1/2, RAM, Pipes of Peace, Tug of War, and his most recent 2-3 albums are some of his best. I’m kinda biased as a huge Paul fan though.

I thought there was half a good album in his first two, but then they just went downhill quickly until Band on the Run and the one that followed it. Since then I can’t think of a single album that I’d go out of my way to listen with the possible exception of Flaming Pie, which I thought was good.

I think George and John wrote the best post-Beatles songs, but I kind of think Paul’s post-Beatles career has been mostly quantity over quality.

Fair enough. I disagree mostly but it’s all subjective.

Quality wise he definitely had a dip after the mid 80s though, no doubt about that. But Ram and McCartney II have gone on to be very influential for a lot of post-2000s indie music. Ram especially.

George and Lennon made some amazing music too, no denying that. All 3 are all but equal in my eyes. I prefer Paul by just the smallest amount.

If he wrote nothing more than 'Waterfalls' in his solo career then that would be enough for a genius tag. That song is sublime.

Definitely. RAM as a whole is a beautiful too (except when it’s intentionally not lol)

I think All Things Must Pass is the best solo Beatle album by a mile.

If you get a chance to hear the mono mix of RAM it is worth it. Not radically different but you hear a few things you don't hear as well in the stereo version.

I love Harrison’s first 2 experimental albums as well. They’ve been really influential on me.

RAM is timeless. You can still hear the influence in modern indie rock and pop music today.

Also is there anywhere to stream (or buy) that mono mix? I’m keen to hear it
