Using audio apps for live performance - general question from newbie

Sup guys - I’m a acoustic guitar player who performs with vocalists and I’m interested in incorporating some audio apps/hardware to allow us to enhance our performance by:

  • adding additional tracks like bass
  • Simple rhythm/beats
  • Slide guitar etc.
I’ve played little bit with things like garage band and Loopy Pro and I can see the potential of the software/hardware but for recording purposes primarily…My challenge is what apps/tools and how to use them with ease of looping/recording a quick track and layering on the next ones without whole lot of clicking, presets on the app, messing around with levels, feedback etc so the playing doesn’t lose the live performance qualities…For example in loopers, how do you manage recording verse and then switching to chorus or bridge without prerecording the whole song? Also what are some simplest tools you guys use for bass effects to sound decent on top acoustic guitar feed?

Appreciate any feedback,

TS

  • Loopy Pro (and maybe the original Loopy) are probably the best on iOS and certainly the most feature rich for building live performances. Enso, Gauss, L7, can all do looping as well but wont give you nearly every feature that Loopy can.

For your last question about “bass effects”. Are you looking for effects to run bass sounds through? Or a bass synth? Or something to give your guitar a bass sound? Kinda vaguely worded.

  • Thanks for your comments on loopy pro.

As far as bass effects looking for digital plugins to loopy or other software to run my account I guitar through and make it sound like fender jazzmaster ;-)

  • I’ve used AUM for my live bass rig signal chain / amp modeling when I played in a band for a few years, ran straight to the PA. Rarely had any issues, and it’s incredibly flexible to do. I didn’t do much looping tho…

I recommend nembrini amps/effects, eventide effects which also have a handy slider for cool on-the-fly expressions (the rotary sounds fab on guitar too!), FAC chorus/transient, and maybe some fabfilter stuff… and a few others….. there’s lot of wild stuff you can do!

lol….One of my fav “party tricks” is to use Midi Guitar 2 to control synthesizers. Like to get daft punk style ‘da funk’ sounds, or a SWAM trumpet or something 😆 people love it, and it is super fun (albeit a little fiddly to use sometimes)

I also used to use ToneStack for a while but I kinda stopped using it… I find nembrini to be more stable and have tones I like more

You can also get Bluetooth midi foot pedals and easily program AUM to trigger parameter changes for your rig… or, even use a midi keyboard (that’s what I did) by assigning something like the lowest e flat note to add a little distortion, and maybe one scale up on the keyboard have some delays / reverbs, and so on.

I didn’t use a midi footpedal, so I never did any live looping, but I’ve always wanted to get one. But I’m pretty sure you can actually set up Loopy Pro to work pretty well with guitar phrases and not use a pedal or trigger switch, although it will take some time to program.

Also: If you are running a looper you just wanna be careful about it when stacking loops or if you are running effects as well. def wanna make sure some kind of limiter is at the end of your signal chain…It’s not like a hardware looper pedal, there’s a LOT of headroom and it will just keep expanding unless you have some kind of compression limiter for a safety net. A touch screen is too easy to accidentally go from 0 to 1,000 on a dangerous setting if you are also playing guitar! Most iOS hosts have infinite headroom unless you set something up yourself. Seriously, learn from my mistakes lol

But yeah - I just really like using AUM for pretty much everything guitar related though, cuz the mixer signal chain is all right there in front of you…. And you can use flexible bus processing to split/re-sum your signal every which way, on the fly…and you have quick access to great visual metering if you want to, as well. And it’s perfect if you just want to use a tuner!

  • Great tips Ambrosia! Appreciate the feedback. I’ll check out the AUM and nembrini effects
