JWM - Not Too Bad (First Attempt at Something in the OP-1F)

So why post an OP-1 Field track under Creations you may ask? Well, I recorded the completed track onto my iPad Mini 6 into Logic Pro via USB-C (works like a charm!), and the mastering assistant took care of the rest. There are more notes in the Soundcloud description, as per usual. Enjoy. :)

Good point. 😉 Good man. How've you been mate?

  • Great first go my friend! All internal synths and samples being used here?

  • How are you enjoying the little monster ? Hope you’re as happy as I am with mine. :)

  • Enjoyed this :)

Thanks mate, and yep. Well, technically no internal samples, just two synths (Digital for the pluck, FM for the bass). That Mother reverb is one of the best reverbs I've ever used, almost up there with TB Reverb and Crystalline. (I say "almost" since Mother had no shimmer section lol. Then again I'd also argue Mother doesn't need shimmer to sound lush.)

I sure am! Man I had somehow gotten it into my head that I prayed I didn't make a $2000 mistake, that while I bought it in spite of what the critical sort had to say, they could be right in the end. I also got it into my head that there's a mystical quality about the OP-1 Field I'd never be able to grok.

This above little exercise proved to me that...the critics were somewhat right regarding the tape workflow (I accidentally recorded the bass onto Track 1 alongside the pluck 🫣😂 instead of Track 2), but also somewhat wrong in that it's not the end of the world if you somehow f--k up a recording. That perhaps if I had to start over again, it'd be better than the first attempt.

Luckily my musical sensibilities took over when improvising the bass. Both the pluck and bass recordings were first takes, just to push something out there and dip my toes in the digital waters of this fine machine.

And yes, there is a mystical quality about the OP-1 Field that's hard to describe. 😂 But I mean it in a good way. It's a lot of fun!

I'm glad you did mate. :) My rapper friend also had a listen (he's the one I produce beats for), and he absolutely loves how it made him feel. While on the surface it was just a simple little Ambient experiment to have a play with my OP-1 Field, it's also a mood and a vibe.

    I wonder what I'll try next. :)

it wasn't a mistake. it was a BIG f'n expense, that is undoubtedly true. but you are worthy of it and it sounds like you're beginning to just scratch the surface (duh you had it 24 hours). We spoke at length. For neither one of us musicians, this is a mistake. Tarekith shows exactly the biggest problem at the end of the video review. That is my only qualm , and why Tarekith and I first agreed the OP-Z might be a better fit for me initially. I really like the top down construction versus the bottom up traditional tape BUT with that said and the issues many know about the op-z (but to Tarekiths credit, he didn't report the same issues others have....he also had great success buying used. I got my volca on a trade but I wouldn't buy anything now used anymore, especially and specifically a TE machine over $500 from reverb or used. I definitely would pay the $2000 (or $1800 if you get it from perfect circuit). that's just me. so I think you went the right way buying it new brand new

going to the dark side is a different story....thats almost inconceivable you mentioned it around these here parts j/kjust make that awesome music that you do

  • That sounds great. I like the apparent simplicity and the great mood that comes out of it.

  • Nice! I would love to hear some Autechre style Idm drums on this one.

  • Very interesting! I wish I had more time and energy to listen to the great many tracks here.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic thats high praise! I’ve heard great things about the new reverb though so I’m not surprised it’s good.

This is great...throw some PlayBeat 3 Drums on this track and take it to the next LEVEL!!!!!!

  • @dreamcartel Thanks mate. :) Will do.

@jo92346 Thank you so much. :) Yep, it was only two tracks (well, one track, because I accidentally recorded the bass onto the plucked sound, but it mixed well thankfully lol), but it was about experimenting, having fun, and trying to capture the right type of vibe I wanted. Seems I nailed it.

@jdp000 Shucks, I wish I knew how to do Autechre IDM drums, lol. IDM still eludes me, but I do love listening to it.

@Slush me too mate. Just been busy playing piano, managing hiring of musicians to perform at the Bistro, composing and producing music, fiddling with my OP-1 Field, working Doordash, hanging with friends, and all that.

@HotStrange Yes, it's really excellent. It doesn't have a shimmer section, but that's okay. It sounds lush enough without the shimmer mate.

@echoopera If only I had PlayBeat 3, lol.

  • Anyways I think I'll try Lofi on my Op-1 Field next. :)

  • Nice one, mate. Glad you are having fun and being productive with your new gear. Every track on any new gear is a learning experience and I've no doubt you are picking it all up quickly and will learn your OP-1F inside out. Looking forward to hearing more of your OP-1F creations.

  • Great first outing. The live tape thing is why I’d never buy one (not enough of a musician to record anything live without mistakes) but in the hands of a player, it sounds fab. Interested to see where you go with it.

  • Sounds great. Glad you are enjoying it.

Thank you so much mate. :) I plan to do my third experiment today. (This one above was the first, and yesterday I made an example for a friend who wanted to hear drums, synth, bass, and percussion).

Thank you so much bestie. ❤️ And I absolutely understand live tape isn't for everyone. It has the potential to be severely frustrating if you don't gel with it. Although for me making mistakes is part of the fun and challenge for me. If I have to redo a section, of course prepare for some choice words from me spoken outloud in my studio to nobody. 😂 But then once I get over it and redo a section, it'll probably turn out 10 times better than I initially planned.

  • Congrats on your new bit of kit. Sounds good already and I’m sure even better things to come.
I think given your talent you’d produce a great track with just a comb and paper 🪮🧻.
Keep up the great work !

Thank you so much mate. ☺️ I was afraid it would turn out to be a toy when I bought it despite having had GAS for an Op-1 Field for a year and a half and GAS for the OG for years prior to the Field's release. It's not only a very capable device, it's far more powerful than I anticipated.

If there was any caveat with the device, it's the off-putting price. I'd say it's worth it, but your mileage will vary depending upon your wallet.

I would also say that its workflow won't be for everyone. You will occasionally make a mistake and need to rerecord a part on its tape, but that's only a mild annoyance and more to do with myself than the device.

In fact, I've never gelled so well with a workflow before. I think being a piano performer helps give me an unfair advantage with the OP-1 Field.
