Album: Dreams of a distant Sun. NanoStudio 2, Logic Pro.
Another WIP album, I didn’t finalize all the sketches yet because of that absurd arbitrary convention that makes a day only 24 hours.
I’ll keep uploading the tracks when they are done.
All made in NS2 with mostly custom patches, mastered in Logic Pro.

Added “Trapped before Dawn”. Will upload on bandcamp later.

You are really showing the value of NanoStudio 2 for anyone that’s willing to invest time in making more instruments in
the NS2 Obsidian synth which supports up to three layers as a sample playback engine. Obsidian is also a very powerful synth engine as you demonstrate here.
It’s also interesting to see Logic Pro surfacing as a mastering DAW with its new Final Master tool that’s getting solid reviews.
I guess more of us need to give it a test drive and see how we like it.
Keep the new tracks coming! I’m a big cinematic style music fans and you do it so well.
Thank you @McD , we are now lucky to have incredible great tools for peanuts.
I remember buying my first cubase on Atari… almost had to sell a kidney for the whole setup… just Cubase was like 500GBP. Yuk.
Just added a new track: https://josephbalson.bandcamp.com/track/metropolis-one
Nice mix of real and synthesized sounds again. It really informs the world you show in the video…
Beautiful blend of orchestral and electronic instruments in both these pieces. I love the different moods as well, the tracks are very different from each other in terms of the feelings they evoke.
Great composition, very inspiring 🙂
I like the piece, the breaks are dramatic and technically perfect, I love the anticipation between them, and the buildups are fantastic. 🤩
Wow, it sounds amazing. Nice work!
@McD @richardyot @Pxlhg @Luxthor @animalelder thank you for listening ❤️❤️❤️
If storytelling ever were in musical form, this would be it. These pieces always have such a strong sense of an evolving narrative.
Great compositions and sound. Is that only the built in synth?
Thank you @richardyot.
@wawelt, yes it is almost only Obsidian. Sometimes I use SynthMaster for a couple presets I really like.
Brilliant! I love the piece. 🤩 But while listening, I got Mediterranean evening images of sites close to the sea. 😅
@Luxthor definitely not what I had in mind 😄 but I’m glad you like it.
I agree. I started with “Trapped Before Dawn”. It is a brilliant, fascinating trip.
Arnold Böcklin kinda images, like his famous island. 🫣
That would fit pretty well actually. Didn’t think of the isle of the dead and its many variations In a very long time.
Almost finished to turn all the drafts into final tracks:
The latest is on YouTube:
And bandcamp: https://josephbalson.bandcamp.com/track/metropolis-two
More was done in Logic Pro which I used for mastering and adding the drummer track and two pads.
Two more pieces to do and this project will be almost done. Will wait a couple days before re listening and adjusting what needs to be adjusted before final release.
Just finished listening to the current album, it’s a great piece of work 🙏
Metropolis One and Trapped before Dawn really worked for me.
You’re a very gifted human being !
Thank you @GeoTony . This project is almost finished, just a few drafts to finish.
The project is finished. I merged the two final pieces in a single one because it made more sense, even the half tone key change sounds ok in there.
So, this is it for 2023.

If anyone is willing to listen to the whole thing and give me an unfiltered opinion before I make the final adjustments next year, be welcome and hit me hard: tell me all that is wrong so I can try and fix it.
As much as my ego loves the praises, it doesn’t help improving my work.
The final rewrites and masters are done.
Bandcamp is updated with the latest versions:
https://josephbalson.bandcamp.com/album/dreams-of-a-distant-sun
The album is supposed to be released on the other platforms on the 20th of January https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/josephbalson/dreams-of-a-distant-sun
Exporting the audio tracks from NS2 to LP4i takes more time, but the final mix and mastering make it worth it.
Finally I had the time to listen to the whole album. It sounds phenomenal. This level of details is a great source of inspiration.
My personal favourites: A Ladybug Diary, Waiting for the Sun and Metropolis One which, btw, has an incredible Lynch/Badalamenti vibe. Bravo, c'est du grand art !
Merci @jankun
I LOVE Angelo. Gone too soon.
Lovely and cinematic. Impressive that it’s all done in NS2 without massive orchestral libraries.
The sound design is top notch. Great stuff.
I’m always impressed that you do all this (mostly) in NS2, and I envy the amount of time and patience you have to give your craft. It shows!
On the Metropolis Two track, if you don’t mind me asking, is that an NS2 bass sound you’re using on the second half? It sounds amazing!
@klownshed @Edward_Alexander thanks for listening.
metropolis one and two were made in LP4i with a couple stems from NS2 obsidian.
The bass is LP4i precision bass.
Ah.. Thanks!
I've listened to this a couple of times now when in creative mode doing some art, which seem to be the only occasion I get the time to listen for a bit longer.
Now, I'm seriously impressed with the album, it's really really good.
Thank you so much @Pxlhg
