Can you help me building my live vocal chain?
Hi.
I’ve learned how to setup and use AUM and it’s plugins thanks to you guys!
Now I’m trying to build my vocal chain and I need some advice.
A- The Order is right?
1. EQ (do I need a Highpass pass filter or just use the EQ for that)
2. Compressor
3. Saturation
4. Reverb
5. Delay or Chorus
B- What plugins do you recomend for these FX? (Free option and Paid option).
C- Anything else?
Thank you SO MUCH!!!
Comments
Personally I wouldn’t use a compressor and would rely on controlling volume of singing and appropriate distance from the mic. I’d only really use compression if mixing down a live performance.
For paid, I’d recommend the Fabfilter bundle. A little pricey relative to other iPad apps but they are pro level and the same as their desktop VSTs which are much more expensive.
A: The order of fx is an artistic choice. There is no right or wrong way to do it. I do usually EQ before compressing. Delay can precede reverb. Saturation can go anywhere at all in the chain. You get different results with different orders. I often experiment with changing the order to see how it affects the sound.
B: Fabfilter bundle is the best and all you need. Best free option is Garageband and its native fx.

Channel Strip by AD is 0.99 right now and had eq, compressor, and gate. That would possibly save you some time
Mixbox is a suite of mixing effects. It as multiple presets of vocal chain already built.
Thank you.
I have a problem here…
When my microphone is too high, AUM lowers the volume of the background music.
@carlodeluca Sounds like your audio input might be harshly clipping the master output. Try a limiter on the microphone?
Can you help me?
But If the master clips it lower the background apps?
Well, if the input is too hot and the mic channel clips, then it feeds into the main bus and would also probably clip. The light would flash red if that is the case. So a limiter somewhere would help. It’s hard to say where the problem without a lot more information or seeing it. Or a video would be very helpful.
Look into proper gain staging…
It’s just keeping an eye on your levels, saving some decibels of headroom. A common range for your mic input channel would be -18 or so.
And I’m only guessing that this is your problem, but it used to happen to me before I learned a bit more about proper levels.
Thank you friends!
You Rock!!!
Any option to control the YouTube volume when praticing? It’s way louder than AUM output?
Btw how do you use backing tracks with AUM?
I use Multitracker to build my setlist but I can load it on AUM.
A not gear related tip from a vocalist here:
It is important to learn to control the volume of your voice. A compressor will prevent you from doing so. So I recommend practicing without a mic first, then practice microphone technique and then - if you have to - add gentle compression last.
Keep in mind, that using compression and saturation highly increases the risk of feedback if you do not use headphones for monitoring.
Cheers!
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/media-assistant/id6466176223
This is a free app, but there is an in app purchase to unlock a web browser that runs as an audio unit.
Then you can load YouTube in the AU and stream audio, record audio, or whatever you want.
The web browser audio unit is $10 but the dev is updating the app all the time so it’s a solid purchase. He is also receptive to feedback and fixes bugs quickly.
Is it possible to control the YouTube volume?
Well, when you have the Audio Unit on its own channel, you can control the channel level, so yes.
It seems a little obvious but in Web AU you can’t
Not in the AU, but in AUM mixer, the volume/level of the entire channel. That doesn’t work?
A.
eq->deesser * ->chorus * <->saturation * -> eq * ->comp (with gentle settings) ->del *<->rev ( with eq control )
**optional
chorus<->saturation is artistic choice , no order rule applies , same for del<->rev
B. start with freebies
C. a better-safe-than-sorry limiter on the end of the chain
the compressor is somewhat tricky for starters , don't sqeeze everything , learn how to step back from the mic a bit on loud passes as @michael_m suggested (well , it also depends on the type of music )
It didn’t
