Koala sampler program change messages

So it appears that it is impossible to change to another preset without directly using the iPad or desktop computer because both koala sampler version do not respond to program changes.

I’m fairly new to iOS music making so i am wondering if anyone found a workaround, i would like to change patches remotely. Perhaps another app could work as a wrapper around Koala and load multiple instances and then a PC message could change which instance is loaded, something along those lines ? i’m sure someone has run into this limitation before so i’m hoping a solution exists.

  • This is a bit of a long shot, but if the Koala presets are visible to AUM (folder icon in the app window title bar), you can program AUM to load them (sliders icon, Preset Load). Not many apps do this, but it's worth a look.

Even if they don't, you can save them in AUM's preset system and then they can be used with AUM's preset load action via midi learn.

[edit] Koala presets don't show. But yes, @soulgolem, AUM is one host that can act as a "wrapper", as you termed it, to enable loading of presets via midi (program change or other). Audiobus and Loopy Pro are other hosts that you can use for this as well.

  • are you saying my Koala presets that i made and shared with friends cannot be opened in AUM and that presets made with Koala within AUM cannot be opened in basic Koala or shared with others ?

Some terminology: I think what you are calling presets are Koala projects. You can open your projects when a koala is loaded as an AUv3 then save the koala state as an AUv3 preset in AUM or other AUhost.

Koala does not natively let you choose projects by MIDI. But AUM or Loopy Pro or most other AU hosts will let you map MIDI to recall AU presets.

Once the AU preset is loaded, you could save or export as a project from Koala like any other koala project.

  • thank you :) think it's time for me to purchase AUM !

  • Like others have said you can run multiple copies of Koala in AUM and flip between them.

If you're talking about just switching sample or pattern banks or flipping between the sample/sequence/perform screens within Koala then this can all be done via keyboard shortcuts: https://www.koalasampler.com/help/learning/keyboard-shortcuts-in-koala/

If you don't want to add a bluetooth keyboard you can always get something like a bluetooth programmable number pad or game controller that can act as a keyboard. I use an 8BitDo Micro controller, they're like $20-25, tiny, and I can customize the keybinds within iOS.
