Garageband - Strange "Disk too slow" scenario

I am having the most bizarre problem using Garageband on my M1 MacbookPro. The source is an Allen & Heath dLive mixing system over Dante (using Dante Virtual Soundcard).

My issue is that I am getting "Disk too Slow (Record)" messages.

The weird thing is that the recording is literally stopping with this error at between 2:21:150 and 2:21:350 - i.e. every time it stops within 200 milliseconds.

I have tried this many times with 16 tracks, then 8 tracks, then 2 tracks. All stop recording at exactly the same time!! However, when I record a single track, the problem doesn't happen and it records fine. This is on the main system disk which had 200GB free (1TB disk).

I then tried using an external SSD disk (newly formatted and empty) over USB-C. Exact'y the same result - recording more than a single track stops at exactly the same 2:21.xxx time.
While I have only done a single brief last minute test, I installed Reaper and this appears to record fine (though need to do more checking)

This doesn't seem like a real disk speed issue as surely the recording would go for longer with less tracks? And the recording would not stop at a pretty much identical time every time regardless of disk used (internal/external).

I also did a very brief test on another Mac (MacBook Air M1) and had the same result though I didnt take exact timings, but the recordings all looked a similar length.
Any thoughts? as I am baffled.

Have you tried Logic Pro (you can download a trial version for desktop)? I know, from many, many years of only using GarageBand, that Logic Pro is better suited for some situations.

Also, how much space is left on your hard drive?

    Thank you for responding.

Around 78GB is free. But on the external disk, it was 500GB.
It just seems so strange that regardless of which disk I use, the recordings all stop with 200 milliseconds of each other every time. I had no exceptions to this when recording more than a single mono rack.

I may give Logic a try just to see if it has the issue or not. Reaper appears to not have the same issue. I will also try my Macbook Air again to do a more detailed test.

Both these Macs are the M1 versions so should be more than up to this job.

I found there are jobs Logic Pro is just better suited for, as much as I still love the simplicity of GarageBand.

  • I think my use case is very simple (hence looking for a simple and least expensive option).
All I need to do is basic multitrack live recording, then using these (unprocessed) tracks to playback through our live system's Virtual Sound Check capability. I wont be doing any processing or mixing on the computer.

  • I remember this happening a very long time ago.

Before you open garageband, try restarting the computer, keeping other applications closed, and using airplane mode. See if it still happens.

I know it says disk too slow but for me the issue was not actually the disk, but all the other stuff I had going on that I didn’t deal with.

  • @tigerspill, Apple just released an update for macOS. See if your problem is fixed after updating?

  • Just by way of update. I updated my Mac with the latest MacOs and the problem remains. I have now tries Reaper, and this works flawlessly. Such a shame as it would have been easier if Garageband has worked. I simply can't get to the bottom of the issue. Even after reboots and the OS upgrade, it still stops recording at exactly the same point every time. tries a different newly created user with nothing else running other than what I needed.
