Is reverb.com a safe place to buy gear from?

Right now looking at speakers listed as "Brand New", but am also intrigued by a couple of "Used - Very Good" items. The sellers seem to have good ratings, and return policy seems fair.

Is it a safe place to transact? -- Thanks!

  • That's like asking is eBay or Etsy a safe place to buy. The answer is the same - "generally yes" but note that you are dealing with individual sellers so your experience is going to be as good (or bad) as the seller you are dealing with.

  • I would say safer than eBay. I have bought plenty of stuff from reverb.com and always had a good experience.

  • It depends on the seller.

From my experience, deals are always better on your local marketplace than on Reverb.

For 50 deals on Marketplace Facebook or Craigslist or Kijiji, you will find 1 deal on Reverb.

Exactly this. If you have a FB account, I do recommend looking at Marketplace there. There are no fees, so no corresponding markups. Yes, you still need to be duly cautious and vigilant, just like anywhere else. But overall I would say it’s better.

That said, I’ve bought a few things on eBay and Reverb, and mostly had good luck..

Reverb has pretty good buyer protections, I’ve bought from them in the past and never felt I had to stress about it too much.

  • Safe? Yes, you have valid protection as a buyer, also when using PayPal you’ll have double level of safety.
Deals: no, there are no good deals on reverb, mostly inflated prices

True but depending on where you live there may not be anything worth having on there. You can buy from anywhere on reverb but if you don’t live within an hour or a huge town, good luck finding anything worthwhile on FB marketplace.

Also worth noting is having to deal with sketchy people and in person meet ups.

    Yep I understand.

Reverb is good for old specific gear. I'm actually looking for an old Lexicon MPX1 unit. It will be easier to find it on Reverb. But even old obsolete gear is too expensive.

Good luck in your search! Reverb is the best for that no doubt but yeah everything is way too expensive these days unfortunately.

Reverb is nice for buying b-stock or factory refurbished gear straight from the manufacturer at a nice discount. I got a Novation SL49 for a couple hundred off last year and it's been flawless.

I don’t think that’s strictly true as I had got some great deals there. I think it’s more fair to say that good deals aren’t that common there, but you will find them from time to time.

If I want to sell a keyboard for $500, I will list it at $575 on my local Marketplace to get $500.

But on Reverb, I will have to pay almost 10% in fees so I will list it at $650 and the buyer will have to pay almost $100 for the shipping. At the end, you will pay let's say $700 with the shipping instead of $500 in your local Marketplace. It's 40% more expensive.

But I will open my eye again to see if I can find good deals.

Same here. I’ve also purchased open box / b-stock items at deeply discounted prices. After fifty or sixty transactions, I can’t recall one that was bad.

You should, as that math seems like a worst-case scenario, and remember that smaller items have less shipping costs.

The benefit of reverb.com is that you can buy from a broad group of people across a wide area, all of whom are focused on selling music gear. It’s definitely going to be easier to find a specific piece of gear you’re looking for on reverb than it is on Facebook Marketplace.

Yes, definitely good for b-stock - some years ago I bought a b-stock Ibanez S-series guitar that retailed at almost twice what I paid. The only issue was a faded area of paint behind the bridge.
