This is interesting…
It is interesting. I have a Bluebox and I'm curious to test it out.
However, for anyone who sees that the Bluebox has 6 stereo/12 mono inputs and gets the wrong idea: no the new firmware doesn't give the ability to stream 12 tracks to iOS devices, limited to 1 stereo or 2 mono tracks. They've implied that this firmware is the "first phase" and that at least the eurorack Bluebox may get ability to do more. But the desktop Bluebox is apparently limited in USB throughput, presumably more by processing power(?) than by usb limitations. Unless I'm missing something, main use will be as two input interface, or for send/receive from Bluebox to make use of effects on iOS device.
well you can still use it as digitsl mixing deck with audio interface for recording individual synths into DAW …. for me great advantage to traditional mixer is the size …
Hmm, close, but not a full USB interface yet. Definitely interested if they get more tracks working.
Love mine. Can’t wait to give it a spin.
You’re better off with a TC Helicon Blender since it allows Multitrack track in 6 Stereo and 4 Analog out to have fun with:
TC Helicon Blender is cheaper, but other than that I don't think you'd be better off with it. Blue Box seems to have many more features, be easier to use, and can actually record and do (limited) editing of 12 individual tracks to an internal microSD Card to import into your DAW if you want, including punch-in recording in separate takes.
Blender has four stereo analog outs, all of which seem to be fixed to the same summed mix. Blue Box has three stereo analog outs, which can be configured in various ways.
It seems they accomplish different things. If all you want is to record the summed stereo output of a mix of the input channels Blender is a cheaper route to that.
The Blue Box manual is pretty extensive, can be found here, not yet updated for features in most recent firmware:

I agree that the bluebox is great if you don't use an iDevice.
I do personally prefer Streaming up to 6 stereo channels into the iPad and handle the audio there - mixing and matching SD card recordings with an iPad DAW is not much fun imo.
And the TC Blender is great for that.
But why have 6 Stereo Channels you cannot access on your iDevice?
It’s great if you want a summed mix into your iPad or computer…but it’s nearly 2024. Who wants that?🤪
They need better programmers for this type of integration. TX-6 set the bar imho and to lack multitrack I/0 on a 12 Channel mixer just shows a lack of proper planning.
I suggested the TC Helicon Blender because it gets you most of the way there if you are trying to record multiple external synths and effect them in real time with AUM on your iPad. It’s a great experience for $150.
Also the Analog Outs allow you to specify which channels feed into the outs so you can can send specific channels to an OUT to send to a Pedal and feed that back into another Channel to be recorded by your iPad. This alone is why Multitracking is so important imho—flexibility in your workflow.
And again $150 is a no brainer.
Don’t get me wrong. The BlueBox is great if you’re stand alone and use it for all its features. I wouldn’t since i rely so much on AUM and Drambo to effect my signal path. The Stereo mix in would have me pulling my hair dealing with so many work arounds to integrate into the way i work.
I’ve been on a quest for the perfect device in this space for quite some time. If someone can offer what the TX-6 does at half the price they will own this space. 1010music is asleep at the wheel for now…so i hope they get it and make a move to own this vacancy…but i don’t think they will…their modular rev2 only does summed mixes over USB i believe. 🤦🏽♂️
I'm not following. You seem to suggest this is what Blue Box gives you (and it is), but it's also all that the Helicon Blender gives. Who wants that? But it's not all that the Blue Box gives; Blue Box also gives you simultaneous recording of up to 12 separate tracks, each into its own stem, which can be imported into your DAW and processed with effects separately. Yes, it's an extra step, but it seems to me for many people this is the main reason they want simultaneous multitrack recording.
Do I not understand the Blender? The Blue Box USB connectivity from new firmware seems to provide same as what you get from Blender's USB. Why would you pull your hair out with Blue Box and not with Blender?
The BlueBox only gives you Multitrack on the unit itself. There’s no way to get Multitrack into your iPad or computer other than importing the files via the SD Card.
The TC Helicon allows you to stream 6 Stereo Channels over USB direct to your iPad or computer so you can record, effect, send those channels anywhere in your iPad or computer.
The difference here being BlueBox only gives you 1 Stereo Channel over USB while the TC Helicon and TX-6 give you 6 Stereo Ins over USB.
BlueBox is Stereo Mix only over USB-use Blueboxes effects only for real time effects per channel.
TC Helicon Blender is 6 Stereo over USB-use AUM/Drambo for real time effects on those 6 Stereo Channels coming into your iPad/computer.
When dealing with audio signal flow i want flexibility to route the signal path how i want to. Having only a stereo sum available to mix isn’t my thing. It’s fine if i just want to go straight to Mastering. But i don’t work that way with connected hardware to my iPad. I need to manipulate the incoming audio to be effected in different ways, so the multitracking aspect of audio is critical for me. I wish the BlueBox did this over USB. The fact that a $150 device that is a few years older than the BlueBox does this just blows my mind.
How is this?😳
The BlueBox is perfect for the DAWless setup—that was their focus.
The TC Helicon Blender and TX-6 are the right choice for small footprint synths + iPad/computer music creators who want multitrack over USB—that was their focus.
I prefer the multitrack over USB focus because it grows with me.
Either way it’s great that BlueBox updated and unlocked Stereo audio over USB. It was definitely a missing feature. I just wish it was multitrack, in which case it would be perfect.
Hope that makes sense.
There's definitely something I'm not understanding about Blender. The USB interface, as I understand it, has one stereo channel from Blender to computer. What do you mean when you say it has "6 Stereo Channels coming into your iPad/computer"? Only one of these can be active at a time, right? Seems like it's mostly doing things that would be possible with a 2 in / 2 out USB interface, but with limited ins you'd have hassle of unplugging/plugging the audio jacks.
What are you basing this on? You can do a send/receive from Blue Box to external effects before sending signal to computer. The limited info I've seen says you can send stereo audio from computer to Blue Box and have it be treated as coming in a regular Blue Box input. This would include send/receive to external effects before returning to computer. What am I missing?
@hes As surprising as it may sound, you get 6 stereo channels (that's 12 A/D converters) into the iPad indeed.
Out of curiosity: How would you transfer SD card recordings to the iPad?
Thanks, that clarifies things, and is different from how I understood it. It wouldn't be surprising, except that I'm sure I've seen Blender referred to as a 12 in / 2 out USB audio interface. That's even how TC Helicon describes it: "Portable 12 x 8 Stereo Mixer with 12 x 2 USB Audio Interface", https://www.tc-helicon.com/product.html?modelCode=P0CPR
I have USB stick that has slot for SD cards.
Yeah it’s rather unfortunate they spec it like that. When you plug it into an iPad or Computer you see 12 Channels of audio coming in and 2 channels of audio going out.
For the 4 headphones out you can elect which channels it will pick up as well. It’s a pretty robust little mixer for a hunk of cheap plastic. 🤪
But anyway, looks like they are no longer available to purchase. Hold on to it if you have one.
I daydream about the Polyend Play+ with possibly(?) 14 stereo channels out into the iPad. It seems like: One is a master bus, one is reverb, one is delay, but the rest can be for actual tracks.
I’m just not sure if the workflow would be my cup of tea. It seems like it would be difficult for me.
