This happened at a show š
I had a chance to play at a show with my new rig last night. There were 4 other DJs playing all on a huge CDJ. They were all pretty good and in their early 20s and I am old enough to be their dad.
I was showing my gear and explaining what I do on the iPad to one of them. Really nice kid and seemed to be really interested. I showed him GR-16 and was explaining it to him. I said itās very much like Electribe. He responded, āI donāt know that guy.ā
I explained Electribe and in general hardware groove boxes . He loved it!
I love these AHA! moments.
It was a great time and we were all talking about our music and gear in the green room.
Iām sure there are others here who have show stories to share too. Good, bad, happy, sad, funny, etc.
Maybe this should be a permanent thread?

My daughter expressed an interest in learning to play the electric guitar, so I gave her one of mine and we are now working through teaching her an Arctic Monkeysā song.
So glad that she wants to learn something.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing your experience .
Old but funny story, Around 2006 I deviated from performing my own material to give DJing a few tries. I was playing a set of hip hop tunes when an intimidating looking venue goer of an Urban aesthetic came up to me to tell me, Hip-hop is dead. Feeling discouraged from his statement, I begrudgingly replied, Yeah, I guess so.
āHip-Hop is Deadā, he repeats.
Yeah I donāt know, I say in a defensive tone.
āHIP-HOP IS DEADā, he insists.
More awkward banter ensues before I realize he was simply making a request with which I was not yet familiar with.
That was the night I decided just to be true to myself and stick with doing live sets š
Yeah, itās pretty funny when you have those disconnects.
ā Hip hop is not dead. It just smells funny ā. Some will get the reference.

I show-ed up to work one day and a dude had brought his acoustic in so I pulled out TC-11 and jammed with him. He was surprised by how expressive some of the patches were. Nice way to start the day.
āI donāt know himā lol makes me feel old š
Good on you for explaining and showing him all that. You probably made him want an iPad now š
How did you like using your new setup? Looks great!
Thanks man. Yeah Iām right there with you š. The new ārigā worked out perfectly for me. 2 1/4 inch cables coming out and 1 power. I had lots of fun!
Thatās nice case set up. Now I understand whatās yours. At first I thought all that was shared by the DJs.
So both cases are yours? Or the one on the left. Is that an SP-404mkii that youāre using to interface withā¦I canāt tell if itās a laptop or an iPad with a keyboard attached.
@AudioGus
Thatās very cool. It seems like you took the time to learn TC-11, because years back I remember watching TC-11 YouTube vids when I was considering getting it, but all the vids I seen sounded like train wrecks.
Man, the only performance I've done in public is piano and singing, lol. I've never DJed or played electronic music live to an audience. I'm in awe and respect those who can create an amazing performance with electronic gear - whether that's simply an iPad with controllers, or a monstrous Eurorack rig that takes up a whole room (Andrew Huang I'm looking at you mate, lol).
Surprised we have never heard a piano piece from you (or if we have, apologies for missing it).
Ah hahahaha.... So funny š
Way back I had found a thread on another forum somewhere that had a bunch of really nice patches someone made. I think I still have them on an olde ipad but it has battery/booting issues. I really should try and save them though as they were quite unlike the base patches and really opened up a different aspect of it. But no, I never really did get to learn it.
Yes both are mine but itās actually just one case. The top comes off. Iāve Velcroed the controllers to the top. Yes itās an sp404 and my iPad with the Apple iPad case which has the keyboard. No laptops. I can simply replace the iPad with a my laptop whenever I need it.
I use the sp404 both as my main audio interface and an end of chain effects processor during live shows.
The sp and iPad are in the base of the case. All controllers are wired up and go into the 4 port usb hub. Thereās basically 1 usb cable that goes from the controller usb hub to the iPad. The power is prewired in the bottom part next to the sp. Basically there is one power cable and 2x1/4 inch audio cable coming out of the rig that goes to the venueās sound system. When Iām done I just unplug the power and the 2 audio cables and close up the case. It looks like a briefcase.
Itās a beautiful thing.

I canāt play any instrument and I canāt sing. So respect to you as well!
I get joy in sharing this iPad stuff with anyone willing to listen. Especially to young kids. I once DJād with the Launchpad app on my phone in front of a few of my kidās friends and they were amazed. Some of them are playing around with iPad music making now.
Making music is now so accessible and I want to share my knowledge with as many people as I can. These shows I do, I donāt make a dime. But what I get from them is special.
More people making music and sharing it leads to a better world. I truly believe that and I have experienced it in my own life as well.
That is awesome!
