iOS17 WiFi auto join setting syncs across devices?

edited December 2023 in Other

Hi,

In Settings > WiFi > blue i button (to right of WiFi name) > Do the auto join settings on 1 device sync across all devices?

Eg, I have 2 WiFi networks, One is 2g, the other is 5g. So I reserve the 5g for downloading large files on my iPad & have auto join=on. However, I also have a phone & watch & I never want these to auto join the 5g network (if I really want to, I can manually connect to them) & have auto join=off for them.

The problem is, since iOS 17, I’ve noticed my phone (& subsequently my watch) auto joins the 5g WiFi, regardless of my settings..So is the iPad turning auto join on for my phone & watch? Is this normal?

Thanks for reading, wishing you all the best

  • What happens if you tell the phone to forget the 5g wifi?
The phone will automatically pick what it thinks is the best network that it has credentials for.

To answer your question, yes - well at least as of today. Specifically, I have autojoin on for the 2g WiFi on my phone/watch, & I manually forgot the 5G wifi in the phone/watch settings - for about 3days they connected to the 2g network fine - but as of today they connected to 5G 🫤.

The only thing I can think of that MAY have caused this, is that I used my iPadMini5 in the morning which has autojoin on for the 5G WiFi - On further reflection though this doesn’t make sense - coz my other iOS devices (also on iOS 17.2) don’t have this issue - only my phone & watch.

Also, I spoke with apple support today & they recommended to reset network connections on my phone - I did this earlier - So hopefully this fixes the issue, but if it doesn’t I’ll have to update my case#. The support guy did say the issue I described is a network issue with iOS 17, so thought I’d ask here & to share info..
