Disabled 4-in1 Hub due to broken contacts through use.

Hi all,
Has anyone else had problems with their usb-c hub since updating iPad to v17.2?
I purchased my 4-in-1 hub 2 years ago and it’s perfect for connecting headphones, another usb hub, HDMI and usb-c charging, but now the headphone/audio out socket seems to be disabled!

[EDIT]
This was not a iOS update issue, directly plugging the hub into the iPad caused contacts in usb-c side plug to become unsoldered.

Apple has been messing around with directing sound output in iOS and iPadOS 17. It used to be that the last sound device plugged in got the sound. In the latest versions of iPadOS 17 you can select the output device. You can see this working in Logic for iPad.

Try installing an evaluation copy of Logic on your iPad (assuming you have an iPad) and see if your hub shows up as a sound output device (can be configured in the Logic preferences settings area on the top right of the Logic application).

Ok, I will give that a try thanks.
    I have iPad Air 4 256Gb btw.

  • Let us know! Still haven’t updated my iPad to 17 but if it’s gonna render my hub useless I’ll just hold off updating until that’s fixed. It’s essential to my workflow.

  • @HotStrange In my case, iPadOS 17 is generally not a problem. I have 17.1.* installed and I'm using my 2 USB hubs (RF-TD-100 and GIISSMO 6-in-1 iPad Pro) without any issues.

  • My Orico Type-C 11-in-1 hub works as usual, I didn’t notice anything different after the 17.2 update.

  • My LiNQ one is working perfectly as well with my 11" M1 iPadPro, iPadOS17.2.

  • Thanks all! Had me worried there for a second since I’m upgrading iPads soon and will have no choice but to have the latest os.

  • Mine works fine too (can’t remember the product details off the top of my head).

@rapidfire does this issue occur with any device other than just your iPad connected to the hub?

I had this issue with a similar hub. What I did was to use the apple usb-c audio adapter first and then I reconnected the hub and audio in/out worked. I don‘t know if you have to each time or at least after a reboot, but for the first it was a work around.

    Hi HotStrange,
It was just a coincidence that my interface stopped working at the same time I updated iOS, it worked again this morning but with a series of noisy clicks and then stopped again. The interface plugs directly into side of iPad- bad idea because it’s too easy to damage either iPad or interface lug.
    Sorry for the scare guys.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Dismantled the usb-c hub, pressing on the pins (circled in yellow) whilst connected to iPad and with headphones plugged in momentarily fixed it….. need a teeny weeny soldering iron and a steady hand to fix this, but changed my mind and bought a 7-in-1 Belkin with short heavy duty cable attached, must be a common problem with plug in the iPad devices!

Yes, it is. The twisting torque on the connector is amplified by the casing. They have been known to fry iPads as well. 😬

No need to apologize, just wanted some confirmation 😂 hope you’re able to get it all sorted!

Yes sir, it’s back to normal, the broken hub was cheap - you get what you pay for I suppose 😉

True. I find if you want cheap AND quality, Anker is pretty damn good. It’s not the cheapest but won’t break the bank and everything I’ve had from them so far is rock solid.

    All done 👍

  • I’ve had weirdness with my audio interface / USB-C hub since the 17.1 upgrade. Upgrading to 17.6 hasn’t solved it.

My setup has worked without issues for 2 years.

Hub connects to iPad via usb C.
On the hub there’s a USB-C port (for charging the iPad), a USB A (connected to my audio interface), a 3.5mm audio socket (I like to monitor direct from iPad as the socket is closer than the one on my audio interface) and an unused HDMI socket.

Last week I noticed my interface wasn’t connecting by default, I had to select it (the new 17.1 choose output feature). If my interface wasn’t connected, I could choose the headphones from the hub (USBC plug and play device) but if was connected to the hub, the hub itself didn’t appear as an option, just my interface. At that point I discovered I could no longer monitor from the hub whilst simultaneously using the interface. Inconvenient but no great problem. Theres a BIG issue though - the audio coming from the interface now sounds really bad - like its very low bitrate or something. If I remove the interface and monitor audio coming from the iPad through the headphone jack of the hub, it sounds great.

I don’t want to tell you the interface is a UMC404 in case you tell me lots of people have reported issues in the past 😬. For me, I’ve been very happy… till now!

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!
