John Oates reveals that his new single was produced completely in GarageBand
“John Oates reveals that his new single was produced completely in GarageBand: “I played all the instruments, programmed the keyboards and sang all the vocals as well”
Very interesting. I might give GB another look.
Comments
I'm guessing it was on the more full-fledged Mac version though, although it could be done on iOS too but probably easier to do the final mix in Logic on the iPad because the GarageBand mixer is pretty basic.
I'm sure Oates isn't the first famous musician to do this BTW, but good on him. Of course for many of us here on the AB forum this is not really that special or surprising, you can easily track and mix pro-level music on an iPad or a laptop.
Exactly... I don't think there's necessarily anything special about the fact he used Garageband. Surely you could make a polished release on any of the hosts we have?
Maybe this is why Daryl Hall got a restraining order
lol 😂
He would have done it in Logic Pro but he hates subs...
You don‘t even have to polish anything, if you have Mr. Oate‘s outboard equipment available...
(room, mics, micpre, comp, rack fx, monitors, etc)
Here’s the single and the story: https://www.musicradar.com/news/john-oates-single-garageband
And by the way, the dispute between Hall and Oates is over their business arrangement. Looks like it has been inaccurately reported in the media (what else is new).
Did he say “I can’t go for that”?
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This is the GarageBand song
Possibly, but Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid...
Really? I mean maybe through the lens of us iOS producers it doesn’t seem as special, but if you tell the average musician that fact they’d almost certainly be surprised. And things like this end up putting more eyes and interest on iOS production which is better for the platform as a whole. Personally I think it’s pretty cool to hear that these famous musicians are utilizing the iPad.
That said, it was likely mastered with outboard gear and very much polished up.
Steve Lacy did this for his first releases. And D4VD used BandLab for multiple songs that current have nearly 1 BILLION streams on just Spotify. I believe producer Madlab used it for No More Parties in LA also which was Grammy nominated, and he claims to be iOS only since 2017-2018.
There are lots of artists using the iPad but only a handful using only the iPad so it’s always cool to hear a famous musician made an entire song on one.
Just to be clear the article says the song was produced in GarageBand on the Mac, not the iPad.
😂😂😂
Ah, I think you misinterpreted me. The OP was saying he wanted to take a look at Garageband again due to this news. My point was thay there's nothing special about Garageband compared to other hosts we have. Anyone who wants to make a 'pro' audio release can do it, as long as they have the skills, on pretty much every daw / host we have.
Do u get me now? 😝
If course I'm glad that he did it on an iPad, I'm just saying it is not some specific Garageband magic sauce involved (though of course it may have had some things specifically used in this, instruments or whatever) 🔥
Ah OK haha
I thought about it, and I think it's good John Oates admitted to using Garageband. This could inspire more people to get into making music. GB is also the right price for beginners - free.
Normally I'm a bit more cynical, but I'm stoned. 😂 Besides, who knows which of those beginners will attempt to carve their own musical path and perhaps become an outsider musician with material far more interesting than "Get Your Smile On"?
(I mean, John's song is perfectly fine, but I'm laying back in bed and listening to the beautiful chaos that is "Trout Mask Replica" typing to a bunch of folks in an online music forum. I honestly don't know where I'm going with this. 😂 It's a vibe though mates.)
...oh I guess my cynical side emerged afterall. 🤣 Okay, back to my music dungeon I go.
Ah gotcha. I did indeed misunderstand your point. Must’ve been a low brain function day 😂 I think more people are coming around to iOS now but it’s still not to the point of desktop/laptop yet. Hopefully eventually it will be to a point where if you tell someone you produce on your iPad they won’t look at you funny lol
That always happens to me but then when I show them what the iPad is capable of they usually change their tune and look genuinely shocked. Especially when they find out Fab Filter, Moog, Toneboosters, etc etc are making iPad plugins.
It’s easy to forget what seems as basic knowledge in our hobbies, is foreign to others.
GarageBand being free does help let people not feel overwhelmed by the plethora of apps and help them possibly not buy a bunch of apps they might not even use before attempting to use what’s free to them to see if this is a hobby they’re interested in long term with investment in tools.
I completely agree that a ton of DAWs can do what GarageBand can. Hell I didn’t even touch other music creation apps until recently! Just koala and tried GarageBand a few times.
Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of the capabilities apps have to utilize them. I commented recently on the Salome thread that I didn’t realize that the keyboard on Salome can be used in other apps to play expressively. I’m sure others knew that but the reminder and threads being made help others that don’t!
also - @Gavinski your videos are super helpful. Thankful for your channel and what you create!
Truly fantastic piece of music that might not appeal to everyone, but very rewarding if you give it a chance.
Definitely sounds much more like a band in a garage than GarageBand though.
When I first heard the album, I was confused, but upon second listen, I started enjoying it a lot. When I listen to it high, it's like I can really dive deep into each acutely timed note, the beautiful chaos, the mastery.
That is very true, but the way it sounds is phenomenal. The deeper I get into my OP-1 Field, the more comfortable I'll become taking more and more chances and breaking out from conventional molds.
There’s a certain stigma against GarageBand , especially mobile . Before my life went to shit earlier this year and was able to really push our music , I personally was making a couple hundred a month streaming which at least paid my cable and internet bill. The crazy part is , the most recent stuff that we haven’t released yet sounds better than anything else we’ve ever done, and I can tell you right now that if an average Joe heard it they would never guess my contributions were done on an iPhone. Yet, when I tell folks I use GarageBand, I hear stuff like “ah so it’s a hobby” or “ you’re not serious “, and quite frankly it really brings my piss to a boil. I don’t use pre-made loops , and I play my parts live along to the built in metronome. I do go in and edit my parts if I hit a bum note (which admittedly is quite often) and I do quantize. That said I do consider myself a musician, and certainly not a “hobbyist”.
So yeah it’s no different than any other DAW (aside from lacking certain features other DAWs have that would make things a tad easier). But if this news gets more people interested in creating, well, that’s a good thing imho
I can totally understand that as a Garageband user you would get pissed when pol just dismiss it out of hand. I suppose when people do that, it's similar to the way people dismiss iPad music - usually it's more of an uninformed prejudice than any kind of informed opinion.
@offbrands thnx! Yeah, Salome is fantastic for playing other instruments, one of my apps of the year for sure!
Yeah Salome is another one to get … I’m a big mark for all of @brambos apps… Ruismaker Noir is the top priority right now but Salome is up there too
Garageband is a branch of Logic, has ever been... so why bother ?
I‘m on a 20 year old Pro Tools 5 and SAW Studio and just ignore such comments.
(you won‘t believe what people call the latter in forums)
My personal favorite on IOS is Multitrack DAW, the 1st version from iPad One.
ps: a couple of hundreds per month by streaming is quite solid, congrats.
One of my favorite albums of all time and probably one of the most influential albums ever for me personally.
Ruismaker looks dope. I’m tapping out until I figure out all the apps I got recently. But that’s high on the priority list for sure.
For what it’s worth, just about every musical tool has been treated as not serious by the kind of people who act that way. Including every tool that those people tell you that you should be using if you’re serious.
Jfc, I remember when FL Studio main was stigmatised and viewed as a "toy" rather than a "serious production environment" back in the mid-2000s. Now a lot of big-name artists use FL Studio, although it seems Joel (Deadmau5) moved to Live.
