Logic Compressors option paralysis ?

Somehow I have never gelled with Logic Pro compressors, due to their massive amounts of xtra options and settings. I always get stuck listening to all kinds of settings while life passes me by….

Does anyone know what settings will give me an Urei L2a (vintage opto).

What Threshold, Ratio, Attack and Release settings will come close to that simple two knob compressor. Also do you engage soft clip or….?

Perhaps its not even possible, due to the variable source related ratio of the original..

I guess someone will say - use your ears, but I trust the original designer of the hardware way more than me to make the settings that has worked for 50 years

Merry xmas 🤶 :)

  • @xmortenx Try the “Vintage Opto” model, the button on the far right. It’s modeled after the LA2A. If you open the compressor presets you’ll see “Compressor by Type”. Scroll down to find recommended presets for various applications of the Opto model. Start with one of those and adjust to suit your track.

There are many helpful YouTube videos for “Logic Pro Compressor”. Most are for the desktop version but that shouldn’t matter. Here’s an example where he discusses the various compressor types toward the end:

  • Found a La2A recipe online

set RATIO to 3:1 to 4:1
    slower ATTACK (~10 msec)
KNEE to soft (all the way up)
start with slower RELEASE (100-250 sec) and adjust slower to taste
enable AUTO release (release time dynamically follows the changing audio)
    set DISTORTION to soft

  • Incidentally, here's the easiest tutorial I've seen yet on how to use sidechain compression in Logic Pro. I'll assume (for the moment) the process is the same for both desktop and iPadOS.

Cool. Let us know how it works for you.

  • Ok not answering your question but relevant: UAD la2a was free last month and now only $29 at sweetwater, plugin boutique etc. Ive been using the logic compressors for quite awhile and definitely like them. But the UAD la2a is just plain excellent!
