Now This Is A Turntable

Just in time to add to your Xmas list!

  • A 13 thousand pound perfect turntable to play a bit of imperfect plastic that costs 5 cents to make...

  • If vinyl is your thing… and you have the discretionary income… and a strong back… and don’t want a packing crate.
It does seem like it would impress a visitor that you take music pretty seriously even if you can’t play or sing.

Yeah I have a friend/acquaintance that spent big money on their Soundsystem. Probably not 13k for just the turntable but I would imagine at least a couple thousand on just that.

  • I’ve seen a few of his videos Mike (I do a bit of wood carving), he is an excellent woodworker. Worth watching his other videos.
I’m a life long hifi fanatic, starting when I was about 17.
The turntable here is a Garrard 301, often claimed to be one of the best, which started in production in 1954. I had its successor the 401 which started being manufactured in 1965. I passed it on to my sister who still has it. The nice thing about gear like this is that goes up in value. In 1977 it was £31, now you see them offered for anything up to £2,000 !
Stuff like this cheap in the world of ultra high end hifi, quite easy to spend £250,000 on a turntable these days 😊

    Now that's a nice DIY project 😇

Great idea to spray the polyester coating, I never thought of that!

  • Btw it somehow reminds me of the Luxman PD-350 which was offered with a vacuum pump that kept the vinyl perfectly flat on the platter 😊

If I walked into somebody’s house and saw this, I’d assume it was one of those $29.99 offers from the back of a Sunday magazine.

  • I have to laugh at it being stuffed on what looks like a metal bookcase and playing “Blow The Man Down”. Probably only plays sounds of naval battles.

The builder is a real master, for sure.

  • No, any 1210 is a turntable. That is one fugly piece of "Hi-Fi"-snake oil. Wouldn't want it if I was paid to take it... JK

  • I didn’t really care about the gramophone hardware being installed, but the guy has some great woodworking and finishing skills.

  • Hifi is just like any other hobby, pastime, obsession @tekk… it’s all subjective.
Some people can tell a difference, some people can’t, some people are interested, some can’t be arsed.
Personally I can’t see the point of spending more than say £100 on a phone while others spent £1,500 but I’m not saying I’m right and they are wrong… each to their own.
Beauty at the end of the day is, as they say, in the eye of the beholder… I happen to think it’s a lovely bit of woodwork and industrial engineering but I don’t have a problem if you don’t…
