When I started this, the idea was to see how much I could squeeze out of a single 16 bar Piano Motif. The idea came from Ravel’s Bolero. Please don’t expect Ravel. He was a brilliant musical genius and I’m just a joker with an iPad.
I started with one motif. I kept the accompaniment, but added my own melody. Then I ran that through iSymphonic, MiniOrchestra, King Of Digital, Mitosynth, Ravenscroft, and Thumbjam. I created 28 tracks of 16 bar snippets and dragged them onto the timeline in Cubasis. The end result got a bit repetitious, so I cut it off after about five minutes. If you like ambient-ish melodic soundscapes, you might find something in this. Have a good one!

Nice. I like Bolero and enjoyed your music.
I see you used both Mini Orchestra and iSymphonic. I have both on my shopping list, but not sure which is “the one” to get. Do you find enough value in having both of them, or would one be sufficient?
Thank you! I have only had MiniOrchestra for a couple weeks and have a lot to learn. So far, it’s been really good. I like the sound quality. When I first started using an iPad for composing, I bought into iSymphonic in a big way. I soon found some issues that didn’t work well with my way of doing things. I got in the habit of Freezing tracks in Cubasis to cut down on the CPU load. That doesn’t work well in Cubasis. I sort of got around that by using Piano Motifs to play iSymphonic to generate audio. That seems to work okay if you like what Piano Motifs outputs. I love it, so no problem there.
If you got a few bucks to spend, I think StaffPad would be your best choice. Be sure to listen to the works of @McD. He has got that one mastered, and he is always happy to help.
If you have decided to get into this, just buy all three! It would help the developers and you will always find something useful in all of them. Have fun!
This is something to close your eyes and get completely lost in. And all from a 16 bar Piano Motif. Spectacular.
Wow, I have never heard of StaffPad, and upon first glance, it’s the last place you would look for high quality instruments. Took me 15 minutes of investigation just to even realise it’s not just notation software. But that price, yikes! I understand why, but when shopping for iOS apps, that’s the sort of price that makes you move on without even looking at it, hence why I’ve never heard of it I guess. It’s way overkill for my needs, but if this is the best way to get a bunch of good quality orchestral instruments on iOS, it might be worth it for me.
28 tracks…
I’m not fond of motif but you manage to make something good with it.
Lovely mood, beautiful sound, nice melody, what else could I ask?
Thank you so much, Mac. That’s exactly what I was hoping for. My wife enjoyed it and said it was peaceful and pretty! Hope you and the family are having a great Christmas and a happy New Year. I’m always up for another collaboration if you get ever the urge.
Thank you, Joseph. I really appreciate that! 28 tracks is about normal for my workflow. I lay parts out all over the timeline over multiple tracks, then I work on each part separately and slide them around to find ways to transition them. One benefit to this is that there is no actual final mixdown. Everything is pretty much set to go.
In hindsight, I think I could have used a longer motif. Ravel’s Bolero was much more intricate and provided more opportunities for this type of development. Oh well, maybe next time. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
It’s definitely one of the more expensive apps, but like the old saying - you get what you pay for. Since IOS music is my only current hobby I don’t mind dropping a few bucks. If you amortize the expense over the remaining life of your iPad, it makes it a little easier to tolerate. Also, it never deteriorates like cars or food. If you do decide to go for it, be sure to get in contact with @McD if you need any help. He is using StaffPad in some wonderful new ways I never would have imagined. He also seems to be the sort of person that enjoys helping others. Good luck and have fun!
Haunting, gradually turning into bliss! This is beautiful @Paulieworld. I’d say it’s one my favorite pieces I’ve heard from you. Nice job bud.
Very nice! Like how you staged the entry of the different instruments without disturbing the flow of the piece. I like your ambient-ish melodic soundscapes!
Enjoyed that, excellent piece 👍
@reezygle @azul3D_Apps @Wyvern Thank you so much for listening. Happy New Year to you all!
I enjoyed the melody and the melody instruments but something about the wash of sound in the backing (can’t think how else to explain it) just made it less than stellar for me. Just me and I guess there’s got to be at least one out of the 100’s of tracks you’ve made Paul that I wasn’t keen on 😊
Bolero is an amazing piece of music, Ravel was supposed to have not liked it and said
“I’ve written only one masterpiece – Boléro. Unfortunately, there’s no music in it.”
Funnily enough I’ve been working on a Bolero inspired piece for a while now, might even see the light of day this year 🤨
Hi Tony! I tend to agree with you about this one. I think the melody could have been a bit longer. The wash of sounds was sort of inspired by another Ravel piece, Concerto For The Left Hand. Probably my favorite of all of his works. I read that he wanted the opening to sound like the orchestra was still tuning up. You have probably heard it, but if not, it’s definitely worth a listen. There is a lot of human drama behind this one. Lots of people getting pissed off. Lots of egos bruised. It makes for some good reading! I have the sheet music and it’s fun to pretend I can play it as I watch. My favorite performance is by Yuja Wang. Damn… she’s hot! I look forward to hearing your Bolero inspired piece!
