Looking for a solution that can toggle pause via midi while recording

I would like to do some dictation into my ipad, eyes closed, and using a button on my midi controller to toggle pause (not stop) on and off. So I would need an auv3, or a host app, that 1. Allows you to pause and then continue recording at will 2. Either has midi learn or auv3 parameters assignable to toggle record play / pause.

I thought AUM's inbuilt recording system would be able to handle this but after a quick look, it seems it can't.

Any thoughts?

  • Huh. Yes, it looks like AUM recording is not "pausable". Hitting Pause stops recording, and you need to hit Record again to start a new recording. Not exactly like a cassette recorder. Probably OK for music tracks, but not ideal for dictation.

I wonder if Voice Recorder could be rigged up with some Accessibility Switch Control for MIDI control?

  • This worked for me. Load MultiTrack Recorder from 4Pockets in the effect slot of the channel you are recording into. Then open MultiTrack and select the icon top left (the 4 mixing sliders) and assign the keyboard as a MIDI source. Next select Bypass. I’ve set it to CH 1, NOTE, C3(48). Then arm the Record button (it starts blinking) and hit the Play button. Now every time you press note C3 on the keyboard MultiTrack gets bypassed and the recording is paused. Press C3 again and the recording resumes where it halted. Hope this helps.

Hmm, interesting thought Dave, I certainly wouldn't have any idea how to do that! Yes I might email AUM dev and see if he could enable a pause function, I guess.

Thank you for figuring that out! I didn't think about 4pockets recorder but that sounds like it might be a solution, as long as you can then easily export the recorded file. Been a while since I've used that app but I guess it must have that functionality, will check later, cheers!

  • Just following up on this, does anyone know if what Dave suggested is possible? : setting up a midi controller to toggle record / pause with a button press in an app like Voice Memos, or any other recording app with a pause function.

I played around a bit with the Switch feature in accessibility settings but I couldn't get it to do what I wanted. I don't know if this was my own inability to properly grok things or if it's just not possible. I was able to successfully connect my midi controller and assign a key to be used for Switching but I couldn't manage to actually get it to respond. I found guides on how to use this feature on Apple's website to be quite unclear.

I also looked at the app store to see if there might be apps available, and tried to research Apple Shortcuts that might do what I wanted, but didn't find a solution - again, maybe my failure, or maybe it's just not possible.

I was surprised how few (typing) keyboard shortcuts Voice Memos has. I found that the app 'just press record' has a keyboard shortcut for toggling pause/record, but I don't want to have to press 2 keys as I would like to do this with eyes closed. This did get me wondering though whether there might be a way to reconfigure keyboard shortcuts. No way to customise sth so that I could just use space bar presses to toggle record / pause?

There's a lot to be said for physical gear. Apple seem to be missing a trick by not allowing more flexibility for ppl to set up external devices to activate any desired press in a given app. I really don't want to have to buy some kind of dictaphone in order to perform an action as simple as toggling one onscreen button with my eyes closed 🤷‍♂️
