  • Gestrument is great! It’s even better when you start sequencing other synth and drum machine apps with it!

  • I feel like Gestrument has slipped under the radar. It’s a brilliant app with a ton of creative possibilities. I really wish it could record from a midi keyboard tho.

I don’t know that’s it slipped under the radar as much as its popularity waned because it’s not AUv3. If it became AUv3 I think there would likely be a resurgence in popularity.

  • There's something very satisfying about programming a GP surface and then handing the iPad to a non-musician. It's the sort of magic that Steve Jobs envisioned with these devices, I reckon. And it's certainly capable of serious music-making in the hands of a good musician, obviously. I do wish it was AUv3 but, as mentioned above, GP makes a very able MIDI emitter into the host of your choice.

  • I was just thinking the other day how I haven’t seen GP mentioned in a while and wondered if anyone still uses it. It’s definitely a cool idea.

Being auv3 would make the touch landscape slightly smaller, and I don’t know if I would like that. It seems like you’d want as much space as possible and remove any chance you’d accidentally touch something else (for clumsy finger people like myself).

The version of Gestrument Pro on IOS was programmed by @j_liljedahl who created AUM and many AUv3 FX apps. I suspect he would need to be paid and sales might not support this as a business idea.

    But we can keep begging.

There’s an app called TC-Data that can set up UI’s for similar experiences with touch created performances. They also added a synth with TC-11.

  • I don’t have it but it appears the Bleass arp app does some things that GP does?

  • @lukesleepwalker it's not a perfect 1:1 , but you should check out beatsurfing 2 for this

I haven’t tried TC Data but I love TC-11. Can TC-11 send midi? I never tried and just always used it as instrument. I would assume no because I don’t see them wanting to compete with themselves lol

I don’t think so… they created TC-Data to fill that need. I’ll verify and update if this is not the case.
UPDATE: Only TC-Data emits MIDI. Both apps are IAA so no good for Logic Pro but they work fine in AUM.

I made something with TC-Data and imported the recorded midi and some audio stems into StaffPad for a
music I could never think of with a pencil in hand but its amazing what my fingers create.

Thanks for confirming! And great track too, thanks for sharing :)

I don’t use logic anyway but now I kinda wanna buy TC Data 😂

Btw is the percussion coming from StaffPad also?

Wild track. The TC apps are so engaging.

Yes. Marimba and Xylophone playing off the piano for variety. I also imported audio segments of TC-Data sending MIDI to isymphonic and PianoTeq 8. When you hear long slow strings that’s how isymphonic rendered a flurry of repeated short notes. There are a few sections where I did hold chords in TC-Data. I couldn’t find a preset that spreads the MIDI over many channels. I’ll need to make a Mozaic script to distribute notes to channels randomly or by range . Sometimes I discard note offs and just add a timed note off event controlled by a “hold knob”.

Maybe I’ll start a TC-Data thread and demo the Mozaic add-ons as they come to me or others recommend good tools. @wim has a script that blocks repeated notes when sustain is down that could be useful. Velocity Keyboard has a sustain button but a Surface Builder script could make a nice uncluttered sustain button .

Cool thanks! It sounds great. Never tried iSymphonic but the demos are always good and I like Heavy Brass a lot.

I considered StaffPad for a while but ultimately decided against it. I just don’t use orchestral sounds enough to justify that price. Always sounds amazing when I hear it though!

  • :)) whilst i Love many of the benefits of AUv3, there is for me, something pleasing simple about opening an app, and just playing - it was this that knocked my socks off on first discovering Thumbjam back in the day, like picking up an instrument and just playing

as lukesleepwalker says, the ipad as an instrument :))

these are what i consider my 'front page' apps, ones i can pick up and play with little fuss and time available (though AUM is in this category for me too, like app lego)

as McD says, TC-11 also offers this, and TC-Data too, but TC-Data requires a little more thought and programming - and, as such, ends up in my 'after the war' collection - like so many wonderful and deep apps (all on me - much easier to open AUM, and try that new new new delay)

it sometimes feels as more people migrate from the desktop, looking to recreate the desktop, some of the magic of sliding and swiping fingers to make music has fallen to the wayside

though maybe not, even the bbc are waking up to the ipad as instrument ;))

So very well stated! I had not heard about the clarion previously but it’s an inspiring story. Thanks for sharing!

I agree here. I love AUv3 and love seeing more of these older apps being transitioned, but some apps like Samplr, Borderlands, etc excel in just being a playable instrument and I love them for that. Borderlands is still my favorite app ever, AUV3 or not.
