Arps or Gates? Obviously both but....
I used to use arps all the time. Mostly because they're often built right into synths. Lately though I find myself reaching for creative audio gates (Perforator, Gatelab etc.) instead.
Do you like one better than the other? Gates for me now.

You can use both!
Of course both is an option, just curious if people have preferences towards one or the other for their musical styles. Or maybe nobody compares them because people use them for completely different things 🤷🏽♂️
I generally play my pitched sequences out on a keyboard so I don't tend to use arps for anything other than rhythmic movement anyway, which is why I could switch over to gates pretty seamlessly.
Arps all the way for me.
I prefer rhythmic gates…seems to get me better creative results. An arpeggiator rarely impresses me, but that may be my fault.
I'm with you. I used Steppolyarp for a while and loved it (still do) but in the end realized I was using it just for rhythmic stuff which a gate seems more versatile for than most arps. I've heard some pretty nice things come out of Steppolyarp, but I'm not usually impressed by them these days.
Which ones are your favourite?
It’s too hard don’t make me choose 😂
I probably use gates more often but Bleass Arp and StepPolyArp are 2 of my all time favorite midi plugins. Arpbud too.
But gates are a unique and fun effect. I think I have all of them and they all have something unique to them and make for a really good time.
Why not simultaneously have both?

StepPolyArp is great. The built-in arps/sequencers in the Icegear synths and Copperhead are also very good.
I do like the gating effect as well, it has its uses in certain situations, but it's quite a distinct effect. I prefer the more versatile and melodic elements of an arp.
Copperhead has always felt a little underrated for what it brings to the table. Your presets in it are awesome ❤️
Novice question - what is Gatelab doing that’s different from Filterlab - is it just manipulating the existing sound vs. applying something to it? What sort of different effects/results are they used for?
A gate turns something on or off. A filter changes the harmonic spectrum.
Agreed. I really like its sound, and the sequencer has got crazy good functionality.
I'm working on preset bank number 2 for Copperhead as we speak! 😃
Oh, sounds good! Your arp presets for Copperhead are gorgeous, so I was hoping a second bank might materialize one day! :-) Are we so lucky that it might be the bank of pads, that you have mentioned previously?
It's a mixture of things but yeah there'll be some pads in there 😁
I usually play arps by hand or write it out on the piano roll but creative gates are very fun. I usually use them just to break up a drone or something and they’re fun to make a drone rhythmic
Don’t forget about Koshiba and FAC Envolver when it comes to gates. Both excellent!
I’m a big fan of both gates and arps. A gate isn’t as versatile since it’s subtractive but is great for use on the fly to create rhythmically interesting stuff. Getting one set up to be controlled with an XY pad is my suggestion for a fun time (as in Endlesss).
Seems like it takes a bit more work to build a good arp…which is why I too often rely on @Spidericemidas to provide those!
I hope there will be many more of those forthcoming!
Alas @catbox if there aren’t ultimately as many pads as you would like in Copperhead, I’ll gladly make another set of them for you.
(I made the Stellar Anomalies presets in there which is pretty heavy on pads as they are my favorite sounds to create.)
Got em. Love em! I don't use Envolver much but I KNOW one day it'll be the perfect and only thing to get the job done.
Bleass Motion fx has recently become my favourite. Can be used as a gate but also SO MUCH MORE. 😋
Ha, well, it wouldn’t really be fair to say that Copperhead does not ship with a impressive load of great presets already (I really like your Stellar Anomalies set too), but the question is, can you ever have too many pads?
(And while I love to tweak a preset for hours, I suck at making them from scratch, so it is just wonderful with so many amazing patch-designers in this forum.)
Back to the subject (sort of): I am also slowly getting into gates after relying on arps for more purely rythmic stuff for a long time. It is sort of brilliant that Copperhead has one build-in besides the arp. That has definitely pushed me more towards experimenting.
