JWM - Here Comes the Boom (Bass House on my Op1f)

And of course iOS comes into play at the mastering stage where I used Logic Pro for iPad to polish my track. That gray knob trick during playback came in handy at the end as well as tweaking the blue knob to f--k about with the pitch/speed of the tape.

This track comes from the in-progress EP titled "The Great Heron EP". And yes, that's a strange title for my EP, but then again I am a strange person. 🤪 Cheers and enjoy.

  • Dude… this sounds dope!!!! GJ!!! Also I totally dig the claps haha

  • Nice change up from some of the other things you have done lately. This thing is turning out to be extremely versatile.

Thanks mate. :) I got inspired by Rose Royce's "Car Wash" for those claps before each drop. I kind of tossed in a little aural easter egg.

Thanks mate. :) I decided I wanted to muck about with the chromatic scale on this track rather than constantly sticking to some traditional 7-tone scale. And the ascending melodic motif creates this crazy tension and makes you want to get up and dance.

Now that said, that doesn't mean there won't be tracks on this EP that don't use a traditional scale (don't want to alienate the average listener afterall). In fact, the first track I produced for this EP was an Ecuadorian pan flute cover called "San Juanito Irlandes". And in case you wonder why I often include a pan flute piece on my EPs, well I've listened to "San Juanito" music all my life, with Ecuador Manta being my favourite band. Although my first foray into pan flute music was a band called Wayanay back when I was 9/10 years old.

And before anyone claims I'm culturally appropriating Irish culture or some ridiculous rubbish of that sort because "Irlandes" (Irish) is in the title, take it up with the folks who actually originally created the traditional melody. Proof below...

And as someone who's half Irish, I speak for myself when I say it's an honour for these amazing musicians to make a beautiful pan flute piece expressing their love of Ireland.

Anyways, I'm now deciding what to produce next. I want to produce something that's either without a beat (relying solely on the metronome to guide me), or something with a non-traditional beat, or something with a more natural beat that isn't sequenced but rather played by hand (outside of the Lofi genre that is, rofl). So many possibilities of what can be done with an OP-1 Field. "Limitations" my butt.

  • You are really getting into this OP1F. Nice!

Thanks mate. With all the naysaying against the OP-1 (OG and Field) within various music communities (not just here), I was super hesitant to pull the trigger. But unbeknownst to me, I actually learned how to use the OP-1 Field from all the videos of it and the OG I watched over the years.

I think though that I got the OP-1 Field at the time I was meant to have it - that is once Apple added Mastering Assistant to Logic Pro for iPad. It just all coincidentally comes together seamlessly for me.

I am glad you purchased something and it is actually becoming an asset for your work. That isn’t always the case. I wouldn’t take the OP1F hate too serious…because if it was $999 everyone of us would probably have it…hahahaha…I mean I would. I think it would be quite the travel companion for me. It’s that pricetag that I can’t do…I mean I could buy a Waldorf iridium core for that type of money. Yet my GAS for the OP1F is real. Plus, the work you are doing with it sounds good…and you are very enthused about it still…all winner stuff right there.

Yeah that pricetag is higher than me. 😜 So I definitely agree with that. I also had to finance a new cheap Windows laptop for transferring the tapes to Dropbox and to load samples and such onto the OP-1 Field without the need for a transfer utility that Mac users require. I figured if the OP-1 Field wouldn't become an asset for my work, I'd simply return it to Zzounds for a refund, and I could muck about with FL Studio on my Windows laptop. Easy peasy.

Well, I don't think I'd ever sell my OP-1 Field now. It's definitely proven to be the "dream machine" I've always believed it would be. (Yeah that sounds corny. 🤣 Hush! I'm stoned. Whaddya expect, pal?)

Oddly enough, I don't have GAS for any other hardware. Definitely not for a Eurorack rabbit hole, nor anything else. The MPC One+ caught my attention a couple months ago, but Koala Sampler can do all I need when it comes to samplers. I certainly don't need a "DAW in a box".

I feel the same about the 404. Outside of that and my iPad what else do I need really? I can do it all then. Maybe one single synth like the MC-101 just for those days when I don’t want to deal with a screen at all.

Great track, btw! One of my favorite recent tracks you’ve made for sure.

  • Thar’s fun, Jim. More chromatic!

  • That little machine sounds great.
I’ve always been attracted to these, although knowing they don’t really fit my needs.

  • Rad! I’ve always wanted to make a bass house track for fun.

  • This brings back memories of when me and Da Boys dressed up and went to Mother’s on Division looking to get lucky. We actually did a few times! Happy New Year my friend!

Price of admission for this thread: PAID.

  • @HotStrange Thanks mate. Hope you get your 404 soon. I feel ya on not wanting to deal with the screen. Well technically my OP-1F has a screen, but it's easier on the eyes than my iPad and iPhone.

@LinearLineman Absolutely mate. Good to see you here in my thread. :) Hope you're doing well and ready for 2024.

@jo92346 Indeed, the OP-1 Field is not everyone's preferred workflow. I've been dying to get one for years (well, the OG OP-1 prior to the OP-1 Field), and once I saw Hainbach's video from last year where he made Ambient on his OP-1 Field, that's when I marked that down on my 2023 resolutions list. No compromises were made on my resolutions list, except for taking an overnighter to Door County. I leased a car instead, lol. Easy sacrifice. My Chevy Malibu is the mutts nutts.

@animalelder When you do, make sure to tag me in your post.

@Paulieworld Nice! Happy New Year mate. :)

    @jebni LOL!

Yeah it is one of those things I’d love to love, knowing in advance it is not for me. Ill have to just keep enjoying what other people do with it, including your work.

Thank you mate. :) That means a lot. Hope to make more great music on my OP-1 Field in 2024. Currently working on a pop production 100% in the OP-1 Field.
