Apps with Deep MIDI Controller Integration

edited January 1 in General App Discussion

Does anyone have the info on what iOS apps have built-in bi-directional MIDI integration with specific MIDI controllers. Like how Ableton has different "control surfaces" so that you can just plug in a MIDI controller and immediately interact with your performance.

I am most interested in apps that allow you to directly edit sequences from a midi controller.

Forgive me if there is already a topic on this, but I failed to find it!

  • My dream is to use iOS as my main sequencer for hardware but still be able to edit sequences from a MIDI controller. I'd love to be able to start tracks directly on my iPad but then plug it into a MIDI controller and hardware to expand on the track.

There's something about editing sequences directly on a controller that I haven't felt matched by using a touchscreen.

Clarifying, you'd like to be able upload a sequence from a hardware controller, edit it in an iOS app, and download the sequence back to the controller.

This capability may be a little hard to find as iOS apps tend to be the center of their universe. And I'm not sure about hardware sequencers that can upload/download sequences, as opposed to just transmitting the notes to be played.

    @uncledave Thanks for replying!

I'm not looking to upload sequences from a controller. I want the active notes of a sequence stored in an iOS app to show up on the pads of a MIDI controller when the controller is plugged in. And then have the ability to edit that sequence on my MIDI controller.

A good non-iOS example is Ableton's Push integration:

  • I'm pretty sure I understand what you want. Unfortunately I can't think of a single iOS app that lets you do this. I'll be interested to hear if anyone knows of any.

I thought maybe BAM had sequencer integration on their roadmap, but I can't find the info where I saw that. So maybe I'm remembering wrong.

I know Loopy Pro supports track controls natively for a few different midi controllers, but no sequencing (as it has no sequencer).

  • Launchpad pro with Jim Audios Grooverider GR-16 seems cool… as far as I am aware its the only thing that works to this degree.

BAM hardware support coming for these controllers not sure if it’s bidirectional or what ? @sinosoidal would know.

It says the next update will have controller support just like LK. So if it is bidirectional, I guess you could make it work with LK and AUM for example, too.

Thanks for pointing this out! I tried it out as I own Grooverider and the Launchpad Pro already. It doesn't do direct sequence editing, just clip launching and parameters modifications. its still a nice integration though!

Oh yea this stuff with BAM seem interesting! I watched the video and this looks like clip launching is mapped, not note entry. I'm also curious what @sinosoidal says.

I'm also on the hunt for an iOS sequencer where the notes can be inserted/edited on the fly using a midi controller ie launchpad...

I thought gr-16 and launchpad pro MK3 integration with the sequencer was watertight, that's a shame, do you mind expanding on what it can't do?

    Cheers!

You can record notes in real-time, but you can't view/edit the sequence notes on the Launchpad pads. There's no manual though, so maybe I missed something.

Yes you can! You can edit sequenced notes on the step sequencer grid showing on the LP without touching the ipad

    Prism

should be mentioned here aswell. The latest update(s) include Launchpad integration
    It is so much fun!

  • Prism + Launchpad might be what you're after.

Might be worth checking out this video:
How to control USB MIDI hardware with an iPad

  • The Launchpad app comes to mind.

  • Not too bothered about controllers ( to some degree )

    Although Iv got 5 linked.

Firstly Im not mapping for perfomance at the mo.

Iv decided to actually give up launchpad x control of drums and bass or anything on this particular ipad.

To gain the launhpad on another 2 ipads.

1 is synth tweaking so need midi and launchpad is kind of nicer than a long keyboard

but also it be available on another ipad that will be for steel and hand drums ( these dont really need to be on a drum ipad ) I can then keep this pianoteq type ipad left on low buffer ( 128 Drambo )

and the drum ipad on whatever to keep 10 Fac drums but also a high cpu mariana bass, sweet.

Id miss controller for bass but with drums. Its probably better to just be at the screen and input, using Drambo pads etc. Rather than look from controller to screen.

Would also be ok for live stuff/Drambo pads ( unless I needed the screen )

    Anyway.

Hope you find a controller or whatever.

  • The point ( for me )

Drum pads via launchpad are nice but not essential with Drambo and being locked into screen without a controller, should in theory be better.

Id need it for steel and hand drums as described.

A hand drum plus regular drum triggers on controller would be cool but you gotta comprimse with multi ipads

    and that would be.

Low buffer pianoteqs etc on an ipad

but other ipads that feed into this ipad, not needing a low buffer.

You got ya pianoteq ipad on the output.

    Need drums?

Turn on ya drum ipad with its template.

    Need synths and sampling ?

Turn on ya drum ipad with its template.

    A dreamy setup.

Not really even mapping synths to a side ec4.

With big knob synths like Dagger and the just bought Nerd, King of Digital and king of fm.

Think id be leaving complicated synths for a while.
