“CC Controlled Rate’s for 6 File Players Loaded with Choir Samples and SWAM GeoDizi”

I was reading this FaceBook AUM group and a member mentioned how he loved loading up multiple file players and tweaking the rates. I thought I wonder of you can control “RATE” with a CC
input and you can. So, I loaded a couple FilePlayers and started auditioning audio files. After trying several and getting the rhythmic juice and the audio parsing effects I settled on some Choir Samples I got with the “DiscordChoir”: specifically A1 and C#4.

I connected 2 knobs on my MIDI keyboard to the 3 each of the file players.

Then I added a GeoShred instance and pumped all the outputs through the sparkling FAC Alteza reverb.

If you can make it all the way to the end… I’d love to know why or maybe how. You will hear me wrestling to find control combinations that sound “in tune” which I suspect most true drone fans would avoid.

I can see why CC’s are just not fine grained enough for continuous pitch controls. I need to use a sampler with responds to pitch bends and then map a hardware cc knobs to control the pitch bend so the pitch changes are continuous and not stepped.

  • lol at the throwdown challenge ;)) i liked it :)) like something from the shining lost deep in 2001

as for 'why'? - as the known known becomes ever more known ( with ai spitting it all back in our face ) - the deep unknown becomes ever more appealing to me

    Thanks!

I have been working on connecting knobs to pitchbend so I can dial in with more precision and not in steps like a single CC.

CC are 7 bits and pitch bend is 14. MPE support can map pitch bends to up to 4 octaves. Right now I’m testing the script with Xinematix which has the usual sample instrument options and continua for more synth sounds.

The hard part is figuring out how charges in the Most Significant byte-1 bit doesn’t make the pitch surge 127 increments. I’m sending a flurry of pitchbends with spaced delays that works well until you forget and crank that knob. All hell breaks loose when a target receives multiples of 127 pitchbends and Mozaic throws error for too many event requests over 256 at once. Still, if you turn that knob slowly it’s like a course grained pitch with a fine grain knob as well so you can dial in subtle harmonies and phased combinations. I have 3 knob pairs working and made a basic CC knob ‘Surface Builder” panel. May hardware controller has 8 knobs so I will stop there. But Surface Builder can do a lot of knobs so I’ll add a row for target volume sliders.
I suspect using sliders in Surface Builder or Mozaic would help the user see which CC is currently putting out which pitchbend.

This idea would make a good app for a developer to sell a dozen copies to drone freaks.

The SoundCloud embed shows 71 listens… I suspect listening for 20 seconds counts. So, 71:1 ratio of interest to hypnosis.

Wait… the views on the thread are only 30 so there is a SoundCloud audience beyond those trying to sell themselves as “audience growers”.

  • I’m not much into drones, but this had its moments. The opening sounded like something David Lynch might pair with some really strange visuals. I’m thinking Lady In The Radiator, or something bizarre like that. I might try one of these just for fun.

I definitely agree with you about audience growers. I get those a lot. A handful of tracks with a gazillion comments on each. I think I would prefer one from somebody that actually listened. I also like the more personal nature of this forum. I feel like I have a rapport with the members. I know we will probably all never get together, but it’s fun to imagine. I’m thinking Nashville would be fun, someday. Just a thought.

I made it! I made it to the end! 😅 do you need a premium account on SC to see how many listens?

Thanks for taking the whole ride. I think you can hear me stopping when the overtones line up. In that way it’s not really a drone but more “tempoless” harmonic environments. In someone else hands the result could be anti-harmony or with rapidly altering pitch’s sliding to and fro.

NOTE: you can just manipulate the RATE field on several File Player pop ups and create similar work. Using pre-existing audio files rather than samples of pure pitches also changes the results radically.

I’m not sure about basic versus Premium features. For the first year I used the free allocation and started deleting work to stay below the limit. But the time came when I regretted loosing work and audio demonstrations embedded here so I purchase the yearly account and keep adding. The account has a feature called Insights that shows top listeners and I often follow anyone that seems to be looking at my stuff. I find a lot of great work just checking out listeners.

  • I also made it… I’ll PM you my address so you can send my prize 😊 Sounded a bit like the Clangers at the end which might not mean anything to you ?
Interesting technique though, might be useful !

  • I love it. I have absolutely no understanding of the process. And I’m pretty sure you could spend the next year explaining to me, and I would still not get it.

  • Very haunting. And then at the end it sounds like an emergency vehicle for a bit
