Good ambient pianos?

I’m curious as to what people like to use for ambient piano these days. I found a few threads about ambient instruments from 2021 and earlier but figured it would be worth looking into again.

I like Ravenscroft Mona Lisa a lot but am curious what other iOS pianos might be useful for a nice ambient sound.

  • I love Pure Piano. It has a great sound and lovely, accessible effects that lend itself to ambient easily IMO.

I keep getting tempted by Pianoteq 8, but I haven't been able to justify the cost yet.

  • I’m a big fan of the MU Waverley pianos, especially the one called Big Softy.

  • Mellopiano Big Softy to be precise.

  • I personally love the Ivory Grand pack in Module Pro. That's what I usually reach for when crafting Ambient with a piano element. (Then again, @rottencat 's Ambient far exceeds mine, so I'm definitely going to take a glance at Big Softy. 😗 🎶 )

  • Decent sampler with winter piano from pianobook.

Could I ask you where I can find it? I probably found a developer page but there is nothing like "Mello" or "Big softy" there. Maybe it is included in Waverley XL or Waverley Tables apps?

  • I generally use any piano I want through any reverb I want lol always does the trick for me.

  • Thanks, everybody! Lots of interesting recommendations that I look forward to checking out.

  • A related question: Are any of these pianos soft or felt pianos that would be good for ambient music?

Pianoteq has a ton of felt pianos you can demo for free as an AUV3.

Winter piano is a felted piano, you can also download other felted pianos from the pianobook site, you're bound to find one you like and they are all free

  • One can make pretty much any piano sound ‘ambient’ with the correct EQ, reverb, delay etc.

It’s an IAP as part of Mood Units. See pic below:

Thank you for the recommendation, I've never heard of it and quite liked it!

  • One remarkable, and remarkably cheap, option is Retro Piano (AudioKit). I use it a lot, because it just fits beautifully in a lot of mixes.

I’m glad that, with the assistance of @ik2000, you found it.

And I’m glad that you liked it! 🙂

I recommend messing around with various settings until it sounds how you like it.
But start with some cavernous reverb and roll off some highs. If you have a way of softening the attack of the piano slightly that can also work well.

  • I would say any piano can be used. If you want to soften it, run it through an ADSR and reduce the attack, or put a huge reverb on it and use more of the wet signal than dry.

Any piano should be fine though - listen to the piano on Music for Airports - not a great deal of processing on that really.

  • Also if you have Scaler 2, it has a really good felt piano.

I was going to suggest the same. Not sure if waverly XL or Waverly Tables has piano sounds but I believe all Rob Jackson apps are still discounted.
