Does this sound like traditional Japanese music?
I was originally going to send JanKun a private message, but since he has me on his bloody ignore list 🙄, I will instead ask the rest of you if this piece sounds like traditional Japanese music, or if it sounds more "inspired" by Japanese music, or if it sounds Chinese.
Please let me know.
Edit
(Disclaimer - in no way, shape, or form am I trying to target anyone with this thread nor my video. I'm not taunting anybody. I simply wanted to pick someone's brain who is immersed in the music and culture of where they live (Japan) to check for accuracy, and that is all.
In fact, I was happy (and a little high) when I made the track and the video and thought I could get a few pointers and guidance from said person. I was proud of what I made and wanted to see if I was on the right path.
Anyways, Happy 2024.)

Well, it does have an oriental influence, although the percussion beat pulls it away from that, leading to a bit more of a Celtic feel. IMHO anyway.
Ah, okay. Duly noted. I'll have to come up with some sort of alternative title. 🤔
Nah! This is traditional Japanese music!
Seriously though. I liked your little bit up there. I couldn't say if it sounds like or is inspired by Japanese music, but I like it.
Thanks mate. I gave it some thought, and it's definitely inspired by Japanese music, but isn't Japanese music. So I titled it "The Heron" (since I randomly named my EP "The Great Heron EP", and many species of herons exist throughout the world).
1 2 3 5 6 is a Chinese scale, therefore your video sounds more like Chinese music
I used 1 2 4 5 6 mate, which is the Yo scale. The tonic is G. However, I will stick to the aforementioned neutral title. 😉
Indeed. I ve been a little too fast to answer
Me too mate. I've been known to do that too. Cheers. 🍻
まんが日本昔ばなし
Once upon a time in Japan
I’m not so sure… I hearing C major pentatonic: C-D-E-G-A-C or 1-2-3-5-6-8 or maybe you are referencing the Chinese issue because traditional Japanese music uses this scale prominently. Current Japanese pop music borrows liberally from Western musical practices.> @jwmmakerofmusic said:
I need to google for the Yo scale. I’m trying but I can’t get my mind to hear the G as the root. It makes perfect sense that other notes could be the root just as the greeks had scales that fit the 7 notes of their harps where each scale considered one of those 7 notes to be the root. I’m just not familiar with this idea being used for pentatonic scales. We only mention the major and minor forms using the same 5 notes.
This helped by providing the visual notes and audio examples:
Now I can hear G as the root! Cool.
I do know J-Pop does borrow from Western music practices. Even Joe Hisaishi's amazing "Spinning Globe" from "The Boy and The Heron" utilises a more Chinese-sounding pentatonic scale.
I wasn't familiar with the Yo scale either until recently when I did a fair bit of research into it. Then again I'm always open to learning more. Maybe I don't have it 100% right.
Regarding Western scales, Locrian is a tough one to pull off without the tonic sounding like it wants to resolve a half step up.
Except Japanese pop music is way cooler.
Do you have any particular artists to check out?
Agreed! Western Pop is rather mid compared to J-Pop.
Japanese heavy metal and pop-metal are even cooler.
Facts! 💯
Only every one I've ever seen a vid of. But especially Wakkagi band, though they're not really pop.
Hey man, even their scale names are cooler. I'm down for a little yo jamming' man.
That was fun… I kept noticing how much the singer’s tone reminded me of Gwen Stefani.
That drummer and guitarist are so good. I watched a couple more of their videos and there’s an instrumental
track that really worked for me:
I could do this all day ...
