Anyone here have or used a Tascsm Model 16/24 with their iPad ?
I’m seriously eying the TASCAM Model 16 or maybe 24 due to it’s analog mixer and sound. I want to run apps like AUM or Drambo into the TASCAM ( Individual digit-inputs) and get so,e analog color, then either record these tracks to the SD card or record the mix down. I’m kinda wondering though if the sound will be that much better or it’s in my head. I also would maybe like to use it with my desktop setup and Ableton Live. Does anyone work this way? I love my iPad, but looking for some ideas.

The sound is in your head. I had the Tascam Model 12 for a few weeks. It worked really well, but i ended up returning it and getting the MOTU Ultralite mk5 because of limited space and just use a Novation Launch Control to manage my fader noodling when i need to on my desktop or iPad.
The Tascam are nice but ultimately i couldn’t justify the desktop real estate it took up.
If you have a ton of external gear it’s worth it. If you’re doing mostly everything in the box and just have a few external synths/pedals the Motu is a better option with the Launch Control imho.
“Analog color” is not something you’ll get a whole lot of from these budget boards. You’ll be able to use some EQ/Saturation in the box that will probably get you the same result (or better). I agree with @echoopera above…if you’ve got a ton of hardware or you’ll be recording bands, the Tascam might be a good bet on a budget. Otherwise, there are better options.
I appreciate your input and my other conscience is talking to me and telling me it’s not really necessary. Probably saturation and plugins can do magic. I’ve actually gotten some amazing sound and mixes from just AUM. Proper mastering and it can sound very professional. Thanks
I use the M16 to tie my studio together. I wouldn't get it in hopes of getting a special tone out of it. It isn't characterful, but that's ok. It is useful for bringing several channels of audio into the iPad, with some intervening EQ and gain control at the board. I like having a big control surface for these things while I'm playing around. As a long-time hardware guy, I find it much more creatively invigorating.
The combo has been great for integrating the iPad with the rest of my hardware.
My chief complaint is that the faders don't control the levels of incoming audio as you'd expect. I never touch them, which has been a disappointment. The Tascam also doesn't do MIDI sync - such advanced technology is just too hard to figure out, I guess.
For working strictly with apps, I second echoopera's suggestion of the MOTU Ultralite. It is a compact but powerful interface.
