new mastering chain - advice?

edited January 6 in Other

Today I had some fun creating a new mastering chain. Getting things loud and crisp can be addictive. I guess I sometimes spend more time doing this than creating a song (hence the 8 bar loop).
In the video I go through the apps in the chain turning them on and off and sometimes changing parameters (I changed parameters when RRS Bass Enchancer was off :)) hoping that you can hear the change (for the better?).
Do you like it? Have advice for a hobbyist? I guess I overdid it as I found the fx amount limit in Logic.
The thing has a +0.8 loudness penalty for Spotify, hope that doesn’t affect the Vimeo vid too much.

  • My advice would be that just because you set up a chain once, doesn't mean you always need to use every device in it on every song. Always listen to the song before you start tweaking and adding mastering effects, and think to yourself "Do I hear a need for this effect?" It's very easy to over do things in the mastering phase by blindly applying the same processing "just because".

  • One thing you can do is try is like an ABX test between the two, making sure to level match between each version. The one with the chain will surely be louder, I’d think. And then try listening without looking! Or posting the two unlabeled versions and asking for opinions.

  • @Tarekith thank you for the advice, I did have the thought ‘now I have one for all next times’ :)

    @animalelder that’s a good idea!
