Anyone (devs?) considering ordering the Apple Vision Pro?

Yes, it's really expensive, we don't need to cover that again. Just curious if anyone is thinking about taking the plunge, or knows of any developers thinking of being an early adopter at this point?

  • My plan is to wait and find out what people say about it and the ImmersedVR Visor and then only get one or the other.

There’s a chance, though, that some of my friends order the Vision Pro, and that I’ll jump on the bandwagon.

  • I considered it, but decided against it. First generation devices tend to get obsolete much more quickly than follow-up generations. So I'll sit this one out until the cheaper and much improved second generation comes out :)

Or until a newly-introduced Pro model bumps this one down to plain "Apple Vision" status in 18-24 months, which is my guess for how this is going to go.

I’m tempted in an "ooh, shiny!" way, but dropping that much cash requires a more rigorous investigation, so I’ll definitely be waiting until there are some in-the-wild reports on use cases.

  • I’ll stick with quest 3 this go round

  • Yes. Day 1 purchase.

  • I have a iPhone 15 pro max that can record spatial video and I’ve tried it on my Quest 3 and was really impressed. Felt like I’d stepped into the future.
I wonder how much better it would be on the Apple device?

  • For sure 👌🏽.

  • A great walk through

Apple invited our team at AudioKit out for some one-on-one time with the Vision Pro team in Cupertino. While I didn't go, everyone who went came back changed - like they had just found Jesus for the first time. They think it will change the world.

Meanwhile, I'm still plugging away on these iOS/iPad apps like some sort of dinosaur. 👴🏻

  • hope it supports Wireless MIDI and that Logic for Vision Pro supports floating AUv3 windows.

    Edit

  • I wouldn't hesitate one bit if I just had the money, but, I don't. I'm in fact pretty far off and have to save for a long time to get it and saving is not my strongest side, to say the least. Trying to see it from the bright side though and maybe skippin a version or two might be good, at least I hope I will get one before it's time for the final rest.

I wish they'd made a lighter "Air" one of the size of sunglasses that just replaces regular screens for a start, and then over time gets more features and the spatial stuff. Other companies like Xreal show that it is possible, Apple with their resources could create a killer laptop screen replacement taking desktop productivity mobile, maybe offering laptops without screens.

I'm looking for a new monitor and I'm tempted to get one of those Xreal Air 2, but I've read that while it's cool for gaming and movies the text rendering isn't as good as on a monitor yet. That's something Apple could do better.

The weight and with it comfort seems to be the main dealbraker for the v1 of the Vision Pro, but spatial computing is cool no doubt.

I’m guessing it’ll be 3-5 years until there’s a lighter, cheaper (and better?) version of this hardware. This has been an absolutely massive investment on Apple’s part and they won’t want to cheapen the line with a mostly plastic version too soon.

I think the cheaper version will be the one that’s on sale now, which will stay on sale at a reduced price when a new flagship version is released, as per the last few iPhone generations.

  • No, I would never buy such a thing like Vision Pro or similar…
For the same money you will get the new 15” iPad Pro M3 with 32GB RAM and 2TB storage - and then we only compare it to the base model of Vision Pro…

Yeah, but that multi-monitor system for your iPad will do a fair amount to equalize the price comparison - and you won’t be able to take it with you.

I've always dreamt of being able to properly work on the go without taking a 29" display with me (because let's face it, it's required for doing any kind of professional work).

Is this thing capable of acting as a large "virtual display" with sufficient resolution to display an IDE at a reasonably small font-size, plus another window with the app, and another with the debugger? Also without noticeable display latency? (so a wired connection is pretty much a necessity)

Then I might be in! :)

  • First generation anything with Apple is generally really expensive, quickly forgotten and ages poorly, not willing to go there anymore.

Are you using a Mac? If so, you basically just look at it while wearing the Vision Pro, and it pops up a resizable window that’s a mirror of your Mac display. And you can have other VP app windows open while doing so - music, a web browser, whatever.

  • It’s being marketed as a prosumer device…but this imo is an enterprise / work device. Especially in the era of remote work. If my personal purchase works as well expected will definitely put in a purchase request for at least 7-8 members of my team…perhaps more

  • They haven't been very convincing on the use case for this yet. It looks too big and heavy for everyday AR, but they aren't selling it as a VR device. If you just want to stream virtual screens from your desktop or laptop, much lighter and cheaper technology can compete with that. It will natively run ipad and ios apps but not desktop apps, so not the ones which would actually be useful for productivity..

So it's basically an expensive developers kit for now I think.

After this you will finally be ready to accept the implantable chip into your head

  • edited January 27

A couple of questions for developers:

-Has anyone checked out your iPad app(s) in the Vision Pro emulator to see how they perform?

-Is anyone affirmatively opting out of AVP compatibility for their iPad app(s)?

Wait? They give you a choice? All I remember is the beam of light, a vague recollection of some alien forms hovering over me, and a slight pricking sensation far up my right nostril. Then I woke up in a field. They say I was missing a few days.

It drives me nuts it when it buzzes, but fortunately that doesn't last long.

I won’t be getting the 1st or 2nd gen, but by the 3rd or 4th iteration it should be pretty solid, light, power efficient and have tons of very usable apps.

Remember, the iPhone was criticized by some when it was introduced also. The first version will be the “worst” version of this already highly refined device. It will only continue to get better.

The demos are definitely cool. I think I could get into the AR side of that once it's not so ridiculously outside my budget.

    Well that was quick.
